Graphic Cards Graphics Upgrade for Core i3 PC - Budget Rs.3k-4k - Playing HD movies....

Can you suggest a graphics card for the following config?

Dell Inspiron 580

Core i3 - 2.93 GHz
4GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 310 512MB card - EXISTING ONE - Does not play HD movies well. Not smooth.

Usage: Minimal gaming and HD movie playback.

Budget: 3k-4k

PSU does not have a 6 PIN video card power connector so I guess I have to limit myself to a card which does not need power input. [I guess].

5670 512mb at 3.9K :)
Yes, that's the upper limit of what the budget and the ancient PSU would allow.

Hardly any difference in power consumption, in fact, almost negligible. You can go for 1gb since it will help in higher resolutions, but a GPU like 5670 will hardly use it to full extent. Power supply can handle both 512mb and 1gb 5670's, do go for 1gb and make sure its GDDR5 (am not able to open link here :))

HD5670 - 1GB Card is Rs.4,200 - Rs.200 cheaper than the 512MB card (costs. Rs.4400)

Can I go for 1GB Card - or would the power supply no handle it?

I want to know if there is really a power consumption difference in the 512mb and 1 gb cards.

Definitely go for the 1GB card, as the minimum frame rate improves alot with the VRAM:

Absolutely no difference in power consumption figures:

I did buy a Sapphire HD6770 for another Core i3 PC that I assembled for a friend.

This buy is an upgrade for an old Dell Inspiron PC which has poor graphics. I used to buy branded PCs a while back before I found techenclave.com (courtesy of my bro).

It was such a huge mistake to buy a Dell Desktop. Opened my cabinet and shocked to find out that there is no 3/4 Pin connectors. The only unused cable was a SATA power cable from the PSU :@

I probably will leave it like this for now and later after a while may be upgrade PSU - Ram and GPU else will sell the PC to someone. :(

I got hold of another PSU from an old HP PC. It is also made by HIPRO and is 300W. It has those extra 4/3 PIN connectors. I am going to exchange this PSU with that as this is also 300W.

Will the 5670 Sapphire card run smooth on 300W PSU?

Found this pic of 5670 from google images...

Please let us know the amperes on 12v rail... A company can manufacture a 250w unit and label it as 300, so please let us know the amperes

I hope the following provides the required info... let me know.

As I am in office I am unable to view the image... can you please upload it via TE quick photos link.... :)

Yes it will work but then on both PSU's that you have mentioned the system will always be on risk in full load conditons... If you experience some random restarts while playing a game then you will well have to change your PSU :)
