GSM Frequency Query

Can anyone confirm what frequency the GSM network in India uses? From my limited searching, i have come across 900/1800Mhz .

What i want to know is , do all cellphone networks support both frequencies - 900/1800?

Finally, for those wishing to bring their cellphones from the US, is it enough if just a single frequency matches? (For eg, a cellphone with 850/1800 support would be usable here?)

Thanks in advance :)

yes, there wouldn't be any issues....

sometime back, india had mostly 900 mhz network, arnd 2001-2, most networks started transitioning to 1800 which is when some older handsets had probs on 1800 only ntwks like idea...

currently, all networks in india run 1800 but are bkward compatible with 900 too...

850 alone wouldn't work however...

also, most US cellphones will ahve to be explicitly set to 900/1800 or 1800 thru the menu as they default to 850

Ah thanks for that, precisely what i was wondering :)

So currently the networks run at both 900/1800Mhz frequencies right?

@Chaos: The info is for a friend actually, its the other way around - bringing a phone from the US to India ;)

Not all the networks in India are 1800 Mhz, still companies like aircell use only 900 mhz frequency.
Not all the operators who use 1800 Mhz are backward compatible to 900 mhz, operators like hutch won't support 900 mhz single band phones.

But single band phones are now almost out of market.

Its advisible for you to buy atleast a tri band phone, you can use them almost anywhere.

gmano is right. When I arrived in Bangalore in 2002, I could use my dad's then 5 year old 900Mhz single band ericsson phone(no sony then) with a spice telecom SIM.
Somewhere last year(or the year before), I attempted to use my brother's hutch SIM in this old mobile. It did not work. So I'm guessing Hutch supports only 1800Mhz only or dual band phones.
