Installing Linux on FAT

1. I am not a Linux Guru [So there are also other options available which I do not know for the same]
2. If there is someone out there who can improve on this method please by
all means do so.

What Is Knoppix???
You can find all your answers here
KNOPPIX - Live Linux Filesystem On CD

What’s this guide about???
Running Knoppix 5.0 Live CD Straight from the HDD instead of CD [With Less Effort]

Who Can Use this guide??
People who wants to learn Linux but do not intend on Partitioning there Hard Disk and
want to stay with there Current OS.

Things You Will Need:-

A. One Working PC
B. CD-ROM Drive
C. MS-DOS for running Knoppix
D. A Copy Of Knoppix 5.0 Live CD/DVD
E. A Copy Of LOADLIN.EXE
I’ll assume that u have downloaded the image file of Knoppix Live CD 5.0 and burned it on a Disc and you are using Microsoft Windows 98SE and have at least 800 MB free space on your hdd where u will be copying the contents of the disc. Finally, You have downloaded the loadlin.exe file from the link above.

If so read ahead :-

1. Copy the Knoppix Folder from cd to the root of C:\ or any other drive just remember to copy it in the root of that drive.

2. Copy the entire boot directory from the cd to the hard drive
i.e. C:\knoppix\boot\isolinux\.

3. Restart you computer now boot into DOS [press F8 while booting]

4. CD to c:\knoppix\boot\isolinux and type the following without quotes:

"loadlin.exe Linux root=/dev/hda1 initrd=minirt.gz lang=en ro"

i.e.:- you can use any other cheat codes needed before “roâ€.
If everything goes well then u guessed it Knoppix running straight from the HDD without partitioning or any other hassle.....
Just delete the 700 mb “KNOPPIX†file from knoppix folder in case u need space.
Copy the same incase u want to use Linux again.

People with Different OS like ME/2000/NT/XP/2003 will need a dos bootable disc
After copying the disc content just boot from the floppy disc and change ur drive to
C drive from “A:\C:†and follow the 4th point.
Now you think Linux is better Operating system and you want it as your primary OS.
Well buddy just post you request and u will get the names of different Linux Flavors just below here or Google it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope u find this guide useful ……..
P.S:- This is my first Guide On this Forum U will be getting More OS guides posted by me but first I need some feedback for this one.

Andrew, good attempt although u should 've stated tht loadlin is the bootloader in this case. The only things are you shouldn't have used the colors so much. Try to have a single color consistent as well as include some screenshots so people have an idea what knoppix looks like. Also should have given some links so people can get some more idea about what kind of cheatcodes there are & how they can be used. All in all a nice effort.

Hmm! Nice tutorial. :)

But I find running Knoppix from CD directly will be easier. Just put it in and restart the machine. (Of course you need to right boot sequence from BIOS) This needs more effort and occupies HD real estate if you keep it there forever.

@ shirish
I guess u have not read the guide completely the very first point says

What Is Knoppix???
You can find all your answers here
KNOPPIX - Live Linux Filesystem On CD

and there's a direct link to knoppix [english] website. One can find all there answers including screenshots, cheatcodes and much more .......

@ ashishmehta
Running from the cd is the best option and thats what knoppix is meant for.
But Running knoppix from the hdd has its own advantage:-

A. It boots & runs faster
B. If u r using knoppix for a long time it will increase ur CD Drives life if u use it from ur hdd

Last but not the least if u talk about "HD real estate" what's the street rate of a new ATA 80GB hdd nearly 2k and also i have mentioned in my guide above :-

"Just delete the 700 mb “KNOPPIX†file from knoppix folder in case u need space. Copy the same incase u want to use Linux again."

If u have any queries just let me know i'll try to answer those and u'll be seeing my new guide real soon but first as i said "i want some feedback"
