Guide Guide: Record ingame videos

Most of the people here are game freaks, and wud defintely like to share some of their cool moves, wacky ideas and someone their good shots with their friends over the internet. so here is my guide to do the same..

The Recording

For recording purpose, we are going to use Fraps. the demo version have a 30 seconds evaluation time, that means you can record a video of only 30 seconds. But if you have the full version of it, there is no such restriction.

You can download it from here

Setting up Fraps

Once you have downloaded and installed fraps, you can start it by double-clicking the 'Fraps' icon that is displayed on your desktop.

you can set fraps up as i did below

fraps4cj.jpg

make sure that you have atleast 2 GB (depends on the length of the video) free in the drive in which you have installed Fraps ( or you can manually change the location where the video file is saved). Because the video is uncompressed, it will be huge ;)

The Recording Process

Here, I am going to show you how to record a video of an Onboard LAP of UG2, Onboard lap meaning you record while playing, this requires a lot of gfx processing and cpu power, so if you are on a low-mid endcard, lower your display resolution and display settings.

You can also record after playing if there is a replay option in the game :)

keep frams running and start the game (UG2 in my case)

The first thing that you will notice is that a small counter appears on the top left side of your screen. this is ur FPS ( Frames per second) counter.

now when you want to start recording, press the "start recording" key that was assigned in Fraps, by default, its F9. you will notice that the FPS has drop a bit and also the game has become quite slow, nothing to worry about, your recording is going just fine, if you can not play while recording, well then as i suggested lower your display resolution and settings a bit.

Once you press F9, the FPS counter that was orignaly orange in colour turns RED, this stats that the recording is in process. When you are finished with your recording press F9 again, and this will stop your recording.

NOTE: If you do not have enough disk space, the recording would stop once the disk space is full.

our video is ready, but not ready to share because it will be uncompressed and will require compressing to reduce size.

the video you recorded will be saved in the Fraps installtion folder, by default, C:\Fraps\xyz.avi

now the recording part is done, and comes the compressing part.

The Tools

For compressing, various types of softwares are available, but the one which I find easy and small is VirtualDubMod

Download it from here
Compressing

now, install it, and start it.

open the video that you just recorded.

now, go to video tab and select "frame rate"

and select "change frame rate to" and keep the value there as 20.

now select the video tab again and select compression
select the codec named "Xvid Mpeg-4 codec and click configure

change the target qunataniser value to about 19 ( you can increase or decrease it depending upon the size:quality ratioo you want, the more you increase, the smaller the size becomes and the quality reduces :)

If you know ur codes and stuff, you can play around with the settings a bit :)

if you dont see the codecs there, you will need to download the codec or get a coded pack like Klite or Gordian Knot.

now click ok and click ok again. you are almost done.

go to file menu and click "Save As"

give a file name, and the place where you want to save it, and click save, the file wud go through the compression and will be saved.

so now you are done, you can share it over msn, or host it somewhere like i did and share the link. I used Rapidshare

Download the video here

This compressin guide is just a basic one, expect a full blown guide on compressing a video soon

NOTE:

If you dont want to have that 30 secs limit, you can download Fraps 1.9D ad use that to record videos, this version is not optomised and hence will cause the FPS to drop drastically if you are planning to record an onboard video, however, if you like to record a reply of the video, then you can use this and wait till the lap is complete, stop the recording and follow the remaining steps of compression :)

All your comments/opinions/suggestions/criticism are most welcome.

Good guide ! You should have included a mini-guide for capturing images in various formats offered by fraps, but this is good enough :)

though i will try and post a tut on taking ingame screenshots and compressing them.. :)

Oh sorry ! I quite forgot about that, thanks for reminding ;)

Very Good Guide Rave...Well Done!

BTW that video(ug2.avi) doent seem to be working

That would work only if you have the codec that i used to compress the file, Xvid mpeg4 in this case :)
