Securing a windows pc has become one of the most talked about and challanging tasks one can employ to, never has anyone come to a resolve nor a perfect solution. Many analysts have made suggestions on their findings and none to be a perfect one.
Here, i have taken a liberty and am trying to put together what i think is the best way of securing a windows bassed pc.
Today, the minimum requirements to protect an Internet-connected computer fall into three categories:
A hardware firewall, which is usually built into a router;
A software security suite, including an inbound-outbound software firewall (which is the only firewall possible for portable devices); and
A patch-management tool to help you remain current with the latest updates.
Lets now put these into prospective view and looks towards a few products and services one can depend upon, keeping in mine that this is my view and it may differ from yours.
1. Hardware Firewall:
Netgear WPNT834 RangeMax 240 Wireless Router
Provides wireless connections as fast as wired, with superior RangeMax coverage and 240 Mbps Wireless when used with RangeMax 240 PC Card
Supports multiple applications simultaneously including: HD Video Streaming, Voice over Internet, Streaming MP3s, Fail-Safe Network Storage, Online Gaming, and more
Installs easily with Smart Wizard and works seamlessly with 11g, 11b, and internal notebook wireless
Touchless WiFi Security to easily configure a secure network
Double Firewall (NAT & SPI), WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK
2. Security Suite:
Installing a hardware firewall is only the first step ahead in securing a windows pc. Software suites like symantec, zone alarm includes software firewall, antivirus, and antispyware, as well as other OS and privacy-protection features.
Software suites like symantec are the most popular choice as they are complete solution to such needs. I personally would reccon the use of symantec endpoint security one of the products i have tested for symantec and it has very good protection for an average pc user and is also less resource hungry.
There are many software solutions like ESET, kaspersky and MCAfee to name a few but the one that comforts you is the one solution that one should rely on.
3. Update Management:
Patch management and installing critical o/s fixes and updates foroms the most crucial part of security. In todays enviroment an unpatched system is far more vulnerable then a patched and protected pc.
There are ways by which one can install patches and secure the pc. The most common and used manner is using windows update or microsoft update offered by microsoft. There are other methods too like visiting The Software Patch - Download site for patches, upgrades, service packs and hardware drivers and downloading the updates for microsoft and non-microsoft products.
For businesses with solid IT experience, it's useful to have an independent tool for downloading and installing Windows patches and upgrades.
Patchlink Updates, is one such software whcih is widely used and one of the best available. PatchLink Update enables you to:
Reduce corporate risk through the timely, proactive elimination of operating system and application vulnerabilities.
Decrease IT costs and improve productivity with a highly automated, subscription-based patch management solution.
Eliminate recurring risks through 'patch drift'
Demonstrate compliance with security policies and government regulations through continuous patch monitoring and comprehensive reporting.
There are other free ways too, the most commonly used free tool used is Secunia Software Inspector. The online Secunia Software Inspector scans your system and displays a list of software (including the operating system) for which an update or patch that your PC needs is available. No installation or download is required, although you must have Java installed on your system.
This is simply my view of what i feel is a good way of securing a windows bassed pc, please while reading keep in mind that this is only my view which i have derived on by using one or any of these services and or products mentioned.
Hope u guys do enjpy reading this and please do express ur views on my guide.
Please note that i havent used refrences from any website for posting this but have jus taken a few ideas from a coulple of articles i have recently come across.
