Microsoft has recruited Robert Fripp, a guitarist best known for his role in the 1960s band King Crimson, to compose parts of the soundtrack for Windows Vista.
A video of Fripp's recording session on Microsoft's campus was posted to the company's Channel 9 developer Website on Thursday.
Fripp, along with Peter Sinfield, Ian McDonald and Greg Lake--of Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame--co-founded King Crimson in 1968. The band has dissolved and reformed several times since.
Various sounds recorded by Fripp during the session, held in December, will make their debut as audio clips included with Vista for startup, shutdown and other sound effects.
Vista, the first major release of Windows since 2001, is due later this year.
