I just completed 3 levels back-2-back. Since I'm not very far into the game, I'll just let you know what my thoughts are till now.
With respect to the storyline, you start off as David Crenshaw, a US Air Force pilot & a part of a elite squadron called High Altitude Warfare eXperimental Squadron a.k.a H.A.W.X. As a part of this squadron Crenshaw & his squad mates are supposed to provide aerial fire support for Ghost team. After their first mission in Mexico, they get notification that the Air Force has pulled the plug on their unit. They get recruited by a military organisation called Artemis Global Security (AGS). The CEO of Artemis, Adrian DeWinter, informs them about their contacts with United Nations & upcoming client base that they cater to. It's a relatively small organisation providing contractual based military support. Crenshaw, now a member of AGS, get assigned new missions under the command of Cl. Bruce (Flight Op Supervisor for AGS).
The first mission (operation Ghost Rider) was a basic task in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Take out a few tanks, AA & Multiple Launcher Rocket Systems. Pretty much like a basic round up session. Once done you unlock Su-25 Frogfoot aircraft & gain experience points. The next two missions are spread out over Middle East & Central Africa. These are AGS assigned missions.
The game is extremely easy. All you have to do is perform a radar lock on the nearest target & the J-Strike missiles should do the rest. The tasks are pretty much straight forward. You receive a mission either to protect a designated base or take out an enemy area. Some of these are time sensitive events & should be completed within the given amount of time. You'll have support from your wingmen, as they can assist you at all times.
Controls are very simple. On a keyboard, there would be hell a lot to keep tab on. Although with a 360 controller (natively supported), everything is picked up automatically. You'll have LT & RT to Brake & accelerate respectively, RB & LB to steer right & left, A to launch missiles, X to intercept a target OR dodge a missile lock, B is for standard gun, Y allows you to switch targets & last but not the least, D-Pad's layout if provided to Wingmen assistance calls (Right & Left) & switch missile types (up & down).
The visuals are pretty amazing. The flight models & draw distance is pretty good. Frame rates a very very smooth. Even in high action battles, it won't break a sweat. Currently playing it at 1280x1024 @75Hz with everything on high & I retain around 75fps. So props for optimisation.
Sound department is excellent. Voice acting is a bit tack but still does a fine job. The AI voice for warning calls is beautifully done. The flight sounds & stall sounds are superb.
Having completed Blazing Angels II recently (developed again by Ubisoft Romania), I feel H.A.W.X is dam easy. BA II had better challenges & also had landing missions. Not to mention boss fights were pretty good too. H.A.W.X pretty much lacks the difficulty that some other arcade flight action games posses. Even on Elite difficulty, the game doesn't feel that tough.
You unlock aircrafts & artillery based on the missions you keep completing. So far I don't see why experience points are needed. Unlike in BA II, where you could upgrade a host of your planes & ammunitions via EXP points, H.A.W.X doesn't seem to give you that option (well atleast not yet). So far I have 8 planes to choose from:
SU-25 Frogfoot
A-7B Corsair II
EF - 111A Raven
F4G Advanced Wild Weasel
F-5A Freedom Fighter
Mig 21 Fishbed
Mig 25 Foxbat
Mig 29 Fulcrum
And this is just the beginning. It seems there are over 40 planes that I can unlock. You have 1st & 3rd person view. Cockpit view is also available.
Game modes include Single player campaign, Free flight mode & single missions. Multi-player can be headed off into Team Death match modes & co-op campaign. Though I haven't tried the multi-player aspect yet.
The game is great fun & easy to adopt to even for a total newbie. If you are a veteran if flight games then, it would be a bit of disappointment in terms of the difficulty level. Otherwise, it's a excellent arcade flight game. :hap2:
PS: Sorry for not taking any screenshots for now. I entered without FRAPS activated & didn't feel like going back. If anyone still needs it, drop me a holler & I'll have it up.
