Analysts: Halo 3 to push Xbox business into the black

Goldman-Sachs expects first-week sales of Bungie's shooter to reach about $170 million, giving Microsoft's gaming division its first profitable quarter.

There's no question that Halo 3 is going to be big. Several weeks ago, a rumor surfaced that GameStop had already collected an outlandish 4 million preorders for the game. Today, a quartet of Goldman-Sachs analysts released their own projections for the game's September 25 launch, with numbers nearly as gaudy.

While Halo 3 is releasing right at the end of Microsoft's first fiscal 2008 quarter (which runs from July through September), Goldman-Sach's industry watchers are expecting the game to contribute about $170 million in revenue for the quarter, with more than 4.2 million copies shipped into the retail channel. That's nearly one copy for every three Xbox 360s in the world, going by the analysts' projections of an installed user base of 13.2 million by September.

They also note that the $170 million figure could be low by as much as $50 million if they've lowballed the installed user base. Microsoft's tendency to put revenue from games on its books as soon as they're shipped out could also boost the revenue number, as could any change to the analysts' royalty model, which assumes Microsoft keeps 80 percent of the retail price on first-party games.

For comparison, Halo 2's November 2004 launch came in the middle of Microsoft's financial quarter, when the original Xbox installed user base was 19.9 million. Microsoft sold 7.5 million copies by the end of the quarter (38 percent of the user base), with 2.38 million sold on day one, according to the analysts.

Perhaps more significant than the sales figures that Goldman-Sachs expects Halo 3 to put up is the analysts' expectation that by the end of its first week of release, the game will have driven Microsoft's Xbox division to its first profitable quarter ever. Microsoft has been touting its fiscal 2008 as the turning point in the entertainment and devices division for some time, as Robbie Bach first made mention of the profitability goal in July of 2006.

Holy f**k! 170 million and thats lowballing it by about 50 mill. All that in the first week!

Thats one of the very rare time a game has reached hollywood big movie standards. I bet GTA will be quite a lot like that too.

Its the Multiplayer feature which was more in demand by gamers rather than campaign or graphics!!!

GTA should surpass Halo3's earnings and sales units.

Halo2 and GTA SA released in the same month, Halo2 was forgotten and lost after 2 months, and GTA SA made its way in the top 10 most sold console games of all time.

I don't see how it should be any different in GTA4's case, specially if its available to a wider audience because of it also being on the PS3.

And just how large is this PS3 audience? I think it would be quite negligible in comparison to the X360 and PC audience.

3 million units worldwide and growing, only some 7 million units behind X360, and this is all without any games, negligible? Unless Halo3' pulls in some magic boost for X360 (which it should looking at the hype, and full insured if M$ comes up with a solution to RLOD), write down PS3 outdoing X360 in sales with FF13 exclusivity alone by 2008 Christmas.
An example of negligible concept would be the discontinued Xbox's 30 million units sold against the still-selling PS2's 117 million units sold so far.
In any case, its not the point of this topic, a million is all it would take for a title to stand with the bigger d*** over the other.

What do you mean by "without any games"? They have Motorstorm, Resistance and F! besides a whole bunch of multi platform titles. Even the X360 didn't have it this good in the first few months. I also think it's still too early to decide if the PS3 will outsell the X360 by next Christmas. If there was a price drop, perhaps. Otherwise, naah.

I also like how you took a cheap shot at the Xbox without realizing how significant it was. The Xbox was a failure. MS had started of the X360 with that amount of ill reputation and the fact that they managed to climb out of the hole they had been plunged into and up to where they are today with the X360(In terms of market, dev and public opinion) is incredibly impressive. Sony on the other hand started off with the successor to 100 million selling console. Was there any doubt how quickly they would catch up to the X360? I think not. The PS3 would've been an absolute flop were it not riding on the PS2's success.

lol, PS3 has games all of sudden, and here I am reading posts throughout the intraweb from people upset about the lack of games on the system. Resistence? Did little against the hype from Gears. PS3 still stands today without any killer game.

I'm just reading the past, PS2 went on a roll after MGS2 and GTA3 released in 2001, toppled over Dreamcast in sales (which released with a 1-2 year headstart and had the classiest of genre-defining games), Sega discontinued Dreamcast in 2001.

That's what MGS2 did, coupled with reviews like This one and some acceptable games like Headhunter and SSX. GTA 3 was new at the time, and it started picking up hype only after a few months it was on PS2, but It undid the hype DC gathered from games like Tales Of games, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Alone In the Dark and Code : Veronica - All these games made DC 10x the console PS2 was at the time. Heck, i'd say it still is. DC's VMU imo is the best invention of a console accessory ever.

And now to think about it, MGS4 is on even more hype, and this hype is almost being overshadowed by the monster FF13. I clearly cannot see X360 still keeping the lead by 2008 end if it doesn't snatch either MGS or FF away from Sony (though a price cut will definitely boost the sales, but I don't think Sony will do it anytime before 2009, they don't believe in price cuts. PS2 pwnd Dreamcast and Gamecube both costing A LOT less than PS2). Maybe I'm wrong, we'll just have to wait and see. M$ is getting their cards right in Japan this time, they've got Blue Dragon, Dragonball MMORPG and Naruto games, none of them showing up on the PS3.

I also like how you took a cheap shot at the Xbox without realizing how significant it was.

Heh, all I was trying to do there was explaining the concept of "negligence", I'm not picking on Xbox.

In any case, I'm kinda fed up with PS3 vs X360 now, and it makes me a sad PS360 owner too if I do that often. The point I wanted to make original was GTA4 will outdo Halo3 in their competition.
