guys i bought 500gb hard disk now i find when i want to create the partition it shows only 465gb:huh: what is the problem????? did they fooled me or what?????

pls give more details like....which brand / model no. / how many partitions in all did u try to create / which file system ?

No they did not. A 250GB HDD has actual 232GB, 320GB has 298GB, 500GB has 465GB. Its something to do with hdd manufacturers taking 1000MB as 1 GB not 1024mb blah blah. Everything is OK. Enjoy your purchase. :hap2:

Thats correct. 500gb is 465gb. No problem with the drive.

From wikipedia: "There are three slightly different definitions of the size of a gigabyte in use: * 1,000,000,000 bytes or 10^9 bytes is the decimal definition used in telecommunications (such as network speeds) and most computer storage manufacturers (such as hard disks and flash drives). * 1,073,741,824 bytes, equal to 1024^3, or 2^30 bytes. This is the definition used for computer memory sizes, and most often used in computer operating systems. * 1,024,000,000 bytes, is the definition used by hard disk maker Seagate."

Any hard drive that you buy, will always be about 5% under the storage space quoted.

+1

Hardware manufacturers Consider 1000Mb as 1Gb when calculating size of a HDD while a computer reads 1024Mb as 1Gb. Thats where your missing space goes in EVERY HDD. Even a 40Gb shows 36-37Gb :)

I believe Seagate was even sued in the US for the same. So now there's a small (*) and fine print at the end usually saying that for purpose of calculation 1Gb = 1000Mb. Only in the US though i think ;)

Only 465 GB shows up instead of 500 GB because hard drive manufacturers plays on the definition of a gigabyte. Personally, and technically, that's fraud. Because computer system bases everything on the power of 2's. Therefore, by Computer Science definition, 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB. Therefore, 1 GB actually equals 1,073,741,824 bytes. By definition, 500 GB equates to 536,870,912,000 bytes. But the hard drive manufacturers defrauds us by giving us a drive that could store 500,000,000,000 bytes and calling it a 500 GB drive. It's fraud, because 500,000,000,000 is not 5 GB by definition. Unfortunately, you won't find a honest hard drive manufacturer using the real definition in today's marketplace.

Phew :D

Actually hard disk manufacturer's are not at fault, it's just those who started using kilobyte=1024 . According to SI system which was implemented before use in computer memory , kilo= 10^3,mega = 10^6 and so on . The respective computer terms are kibibyte, mebi, gibi, tebi and so on . Hard disk manufacturer's just got a good point to make profit .
