my 80 gb samsung hard drive power connector got burned. it is not usable now. i'm not sure if it is the problem of smps or hard drive. after it got fried i removed the connector and hard drive and then turned on the system. there was no problem at first but then after 2 or 3 shutdowns and restart system doesnt turned on into the bios only the green light is seen not the red light. after 2 or 3 instances like this it again worked with no problems. is it the smps or since when the hd connector wires burned every thing else with it also got effected or smps effected. can someone pls help. also there burned smell in the cabinet after i got it all cleaned......give some tips

my smps corsair hx620

the hard drive cannot blow the smps, or burn the connector, the other way around is what normally happens. and the same has happened in ur case too. Do you have a UPS or a surge protector ? there might have been power fluctuation or a surge which might have caused this.

your smps (corsair hx620) might be going down the hill...but maybe something external (main power source maybe) is responsible for this. Since u are getting burning smell, stop using the system with the psu and get it rma'ed. Also is the HDD fried ? it might be residue smell of the hdd pcb fried left back in the cabinet. Check exactly which it is.

not using ups. extension cable i think got a surge protector. as i was using tv and cfl lamps i didnt see any fluctuations. but when i asked some computer service ppl they said about hearing shortage in hd and thereby burning connectors. should i send smps to service. burning smell becoz of the residue left in the fans of cabinet and the hd below the burned one.

Can you get your friends SMPS and just test it out and see? Or can u take ur SMPS to ur friends comp and see?

Otherwise screw experimenting and call a technician to have a look.

Bet 100% it's the PSU's fault......as said by techmind, the HDD can never affect a power connector......even though your extension cable has surge protection, it's best to keep a UPS handy......our country's power fluctuates in simple harmonic motion with our big netas' mouths.......never dependable.....

computer is working normally now. though hd seems to get 2-3 deg higher. though i havent worked it on full load. i doubt technicians quality here. it seems i should invest in a ups.
