It's about time that United States elite academic institutions finally got around to not only using open-source software, but also teaching it. In the April 2008 edition of Harvard Business Review, Harvard gives its MBA students a taste of the decision facing every company that leverages technology as part of its business

Not open sourcing, as the case study implies, is a losing game. There is simply too much interest in open communities created to develop software in the image of those communities, and not in any single vendor's image.

hehe, you think something like photoshop will ever have to go down this path ?

Nope, cos all the innovaitons in it are tied up with patents like nobody's business especially the professional producing bits.

PS is an excellent example on how to do propietary the right way and one must admit prolly lucky in that the processes could be reasonably patented.

The really hard question is when can you get away with it or not ?

Some apps lend themselves or not to OS much more easily than others.
