Graphic Cards Has any 6950 owner tried this --- AMD Radeon HD 6950 can be unlocked to HD 6970

Dunno why AMD couldn't get this card right.

LOL I am sure AMD left this on the HD 6950 purposefully to kill the GTX 570 as it cant compete with the GTX 570 with the HD 6970 ! They will want to catch up with sales in the holiday season that why may be the 1st batch of around say a million parts were just bios disabled. It also counters Nvidia's upcoming GTX 560 which now has to sell at 249$ to be even competitive :P....and ya HD 6950/6970 dies are much much smaller (by almost 50%) compared to the GTX 580/570 dies....and it costs almosts the same to make a HD 6950 then what it does for the HD 6970...so surely it was a very calculated stunt by AMD :D

Of course it will be disabled suddenly w/o any notice once the sale nos touches high levels :P

Very very nice. Though I was eyeing for the GTX 560 for Feb end, I think I'll grab another Radeon this time.

Umm, why would they do that, they get 70$ more profit by selling a HD6970 compared to a HD6950, so why on earth would they make the HD6950 unlock to HD6970 complete and with 100% working cases reported till now??????

Even if they sell a million HD6950 and say 700,000 HD6970, they'll still make less profit than selling a million HD6970 compared to 700,000 HD6950.

WHat my point is, the HD6950 is eating into the HD6970 sales, which may be good for enthusiasts but not for AMD.

^^ Finally what matters to them is volume will be much more and more importantly they will be able to compete with the GTX 570 w/o a fuss nw :)

Its like I import 10 pieces of GPUs for 10k.....I can price them at 15k but no one will buy them....or say I sell 2 pieces ....I price it at 12k and sell all in just a week...sometimes in a volume game even thin margins withstands !

@CompAddict:

Guess they were lazy to laser neuter the HD6970 cores or found it too expensive to get HD6950 diffused as separate parts. Also the announcement of this came quite close to when nVidia was releasing competitive products. What ever it may be, think it is a smart move. Its not about pure profits always, long term business strategies come into play. Team Red wants an ATI accelerator sold, come what may be.

Hmm I guess yeah, there are rumours that the HD6970 is not the complete version of what Cayman was supposed to be, and that it still has locked shaders or something. If this unlocks to 1920 Shaders

^ What I think is the the missing 8-pin connector is going to limit the overclocking ability of modded card by significant level. Not only that, I have doubts about modded 6950 can be padded over 25-30% of PowerTune profile due to the lack of extra power required. I think that is why all the current screenshots show only +20% PowerTune padding of modded card. Also, I think the modded 6950 will be throttled by power when the graphics workload is high... not that it's a very common scenario. Guess that also answers the reason why modded 6590 is using less power compared to 6970. The extra power for 6970 is probably required when the card is pushed over with workload.

Regardless, for people who are not going to overclock this is a kickass mod. It remains to be seen if the future batches will have shaders fused off from the die, instead of current bios-disabled state. In which case, this mod will loose raison d'etre. :)
The 2 extra pins on the 6970 are ground pins. Their absence should not affect the overclocking ability of the 6950s, only issue is that the RAM on the 6950 is 5GHz effective, while that on the 6970 is 6GHz effective.

^^

That is something which always confused me. Why the 6 PIN is rated at 75W and the 8 PIN is rated at way higher, when the extra pins are just grounds.

The 6 pin cable officially supplies 75w to a graphics card. The 8 pin cable officially supplies up to 150w to a graphics card.

6 pin amperage 6.25a

8 pin amperage 12.5a

A 6 pin connector is typically made of 3 strands of 18 gauge wire, having a total ampacity of near 45A, and you're not going to stress your card significantly, even if you exceed this specification by ~100%.

Sapphire warranty duration sucks. No one knew it had only 2 years parts warranty and Aditya has refused to RMA a member's ~2.2yrs old card :|

Its better to get HIS cards that have 3 years parts+ labour(18.5k for HD6950) or the Asus cards (3yrs p&l). Not sure about MSI too. They have 2 yrs parts and 3 yrs labor according to Newegg and i guess we will see a similar thread like the Sapphire one soon
