my WD10EACS (4 platter version) died & it had all my tv shows, personal documents, personal pictures, p***, anime, cartoons, games & music

i gave for recovery to 2 guys locally but they said the head crashed & quoted 75k

i messaged amarbir & he said send it for inspection but when I asked few ordinary question he said "as you don't trust me get it done by someone else"

so here I am asking for help

does anyone here know data recovery or anyone who can do it within 10k

please help me

I am nothing without those data

please help me fast

udit send it across to us , we will help u get it done here in NP, we have no idea about charges and an inquire about the same and let you know. Let us know if interested

Too bad...
How much had you used (Out of 1TB)???

And 75k:O for recovery !? Ouch...
Try getting it done locally by someone you trust...

Geez...

I suggest you have separate 250gig (x4) HDs from now on(instead of one big drive with all your data on it) and store your data accordingly ! Esp. your personal stuff...

Not always easy to keep multiple drives (250X4).

Well, simplest is to backup everything. For 1 Tb of data, keep 2 Tbs of space on 2 X 1Tb drives.

No offense to Udit, and a general observation as such, but I am surprised at how a lot of ppl spend so much on so much stuff, but so little on data they would NOT like to lose.

Coming to the current situation, Udit, I doubt data recovery would be possible for cheap, since its a pretty expensive market as such. Try mediahome/amarbir if you must.

However, actually, ur cheapest option would be to get the drive RMAed, (if the recovery guys havent opened it up physically or anything like that). Simply get a new drive n just collect the stuff again. You can download, + I am sure there are lots of members here who know you well and would send the data across to you one way or the other :)

Even spending HDDs across by bluedart for stuff == Wayyyyy cheaper than data recovery (even cheaper than your budget of 10k).

Keep in mind any data recovery guy will probably open it up making replacement impossible.

Of course, I am assuming its stuff you can get from here and there, in which case this doesnt make much sense. In case of personal data/photos etc, thats a whole different case, and depends on how much you value it at and can spend to recover it :)

By the way, I work on backup/recovery stuff for a living. My advice for next time, just keep 2 drives, 1 internal and 1 external, keeping them in sync once a week. Redundancy is a small price to pay for safety of data you want to keep :)

it is personal stuff :(

can't you do it for me :ashamed:

Shud have seen that coming and clarified :p My field is more of software based backup/recovery for databases and stuff, on UNIX on top of that. A bit too specialized for your purposes ;)

For personal stuff? Then you will need to get it done I guess. Good luck. Maybe if you tell them you only need a part of the data (personal one) and not all of it, they might reduce price? No harm in asking.

Also, I guess everyone is wiser after it happens to them once. Next time keep a backup. No offense intended.

I lost lots of pics+videos of my elder daughter in a crash. Since then, RAID 1 for ALL my data.

@Udit, Amarbir/Mediahome seem to be ur best bet cost wise. Data recovery is expensive in case of a mechanical failure and these two are expected to be reasonable. I wouldn't recommend getting ur disk checked at multiple places. Could lead to more damage. Decide on one firm and get it done.

I have heard that RAID 1 is not a fail safe protection for data as when there is a virus attack or data corruption problem on one drive it gets replicated on the other, correct me if this is wrong.

I have such sensitive data on my HDDs that rather than send it for data recovery I would destroy a HDD when it fails. I would do this because I have at least 3 separate backup HDDs of all my data. I learnt my lesson a few years back when 2 IBM and 2 Maxtor HDDs died within a year :(

@Udit, in future make a backup of your HDD to an external drive and update it regularly - I use a file synchronizing software. I dont know anyone who is a specialist in data recovery so I cannot make any suggestions !! Didn't you get one of the Vantec SATA HDD docks from KTM ?

yes lesson learned

ya I got one of the Vantec SATA HDD docks from KMD

There is nothing more disheartening then finding that a piece of hardware has gone to computer heaven specially if it is a HDD :(

I use 2 external HDD cases and I use a program "Super Flexible File Synchronizer" this does a quick update of all files to my external HDDs.

true :(

cool but can we choose which folders to Synchronize?

^^You can even use Sync Toy, a free power tool for Vista/ XP (selectable folders etc.). I use that to sync between my EEEPC and main rig. It has a native 64bit version also.

@Eazy, the risk of virii is there but my main back ups are RAIDed on Linux. My docs and other files accessed on a day to day basis are RAIDed on Vista, which thankfully has never been infected. A good AV solution+ safe practices takes care of that. I also have the same Vantec docks (one of the 1st few here who got it, I think), but syncing an ever growing collection of music/ pictures/ video which is constantly being organised would take up too much time as compared to RAID.

Regarding file corruption, that'll happen also if synced. It's the same as RAID 1 (replication of data), only not done on the fly.

YES !!

Its takes me less then a minute to synchronize 2 HDDs - because I do it every day, but if movies and large downloads are to be copied then it may take a bit longer :)

I have read that RAID 1 slows down the working process a wee bit - RIGHT ? I am sure this slowing down may not even be noticeable.

The reason I did not use Sync Toy was that it needs .NET to run.... and I dislike .NET ...... but now that I have gone the ATI way Catalyst CC requires .NET <<SIGH>>

@Udit: AFAIK replacing the head will cost as much as a new smilar hdd + labour charges. Which would come to about 15k roughly. 75k is too much IMO. Also I don't do the recovery stuff tho I know someone who does it.

+1 for syncback :) I use it as well, and you can choose folders to sync. I do it only once a week though rather than daily. Less risk of an accidental deletion then me realising its gone after 2 days :p

-1 for synctoy. I used it earlier. But tried uninstalling it one day n got a BSOD  Kicked it after that.
