I wanted to ask a few questions:

Question 1:

My HDD developed bad sectors due to which I am unable to use it. I originally bought it in September 2008. It was replaced one in 2009 and then again in 2010. Back then the warranty was 5 years. I have lost the replacement challans/receipts but have a copy of the purchase bill.

When it was replaced in 2010 the HDD I had given an engineer who had registered it with Accel Frontline or Seagate I don't remember which to get it replaced but now I am unable to find him.

Am I still eligible for getting a replacement?

Question 2:

I called up PrimeABGB to get quotations for 1 TB HDDs. They told me it is Rs.6000/- for Seagate Baracuda and Rs.6200/- for WD Green and the warranty for each is 2 years and 3 Years Respectively.

I saw the flipkart link deepakvrao posted in his thread - Is this a good HDD to buy?

The price of the external 2.5" HDD 1 TB is the same as the internal 1 TB Desktop HDD. This makes me wonder if the quotations are right because normally external HDDs are costlier than the internal ones.

Question 3:

I had changed the SATA cable back in August or September 2011 when I noticed a few (3) Reallocated Counts in HDTune. The reallocated count stopped increasing but the HDD finally gave up this weekend. Was I too late to change the cable and was the cable the only culprit?

Please Reply..

That flipkart item is out of stock, and flipkart rarely updates prices of items that are out of stock. They dont even try to bring back items that are out of stock in the first place.

Cable can be a possible culprit, but usually there are multiple factors that can come together to make a hdd go bad.

Just FYI, if the HDD is made in Jan onwards, you may have reduced warranty (Seagate - 1yr and WD - 2 yrs.). So do check that bit out too.

@vivek: When I asked about warranty duration on current Seagate HDDs at Accel Frontline they told me it is 2 years. Maybe they were talking about HDDs prior to January. BTW remember I told you that my HDD was going to crash - it did. Things started getting worse which is why I didn't call you for those Top Gear episodes. Really Sorry mate should have kept you posted.

Anyways, I checked my RMA status on Sunday, it read - 'Blocked for allocation - Escalated items' with 27th Jan as the date. I checked today and it is still the same. It has been a little over a week and they did say 20 days but is there anything to be worried about considering the status message?

No matter when the HDDs are manufactured, you will get the balance of the warranty remaining on your original drive. So, if your first drive was purchased 4 years 6 months ago, the new drive will carry only 6 months warranty irrespective of the time when it was manufactured.

In any case, they will provide a minimum warranty of 90 days.
