Hi Guys

I face a strange problem , sometimes the transfer rates on the HDD come down to 3 ~ 10 MB/s , if i change the Sata cables then everything goes back to normal.

I have a total of 9~10 Sata cables which i keep rotating when the speeds suddenly go down , this might happen once in a peroid of a month or more than a month , all i do is simply change my cables with previous ones then the speeds are back to normal.

Can anyone tell me whats going on.

Does the sata cable have some chip inside it or something ???

My hdd speeds dropped after i used a HDD monitoring software called HDD Health which is a S.M.A.R.T. monitoring software which monitors thresholds.

One thing that i have noticed with my PC is whenever i do something that monitors SMART status of HDD's my transfer rates drop to 3 ~ 10 MB/s this is not always but this

phenomenon occurs only after monitoring the SMART Status.

This is a strange thing thats happens.
 
what happens if you dont use the program? do speeds return back to normal?

does the same happen if you use everest, or hdtune? i dont think a sata cable hs any chip inside. the only chip that comes into use will be the mobo sata controller chip and maybe anyother chip on the hdd. (amarbirji will be more helpful in this case since he knows more about hdds than majority of us here)

oh yes. it has not one but multiple quad core i7 chips inside. no heat sink :rofl: though since you would be easily able to see them.:no:

Stop using any HDD monitoring software and ur problems will be solved.
 
Man I was facing this problem till last week.
Few questions like a docter:

Are you using Sata HDs in Ide mode?
If yes then ur harddisk are running in PIO mode
You can know this under through Device Manager under IDE Controller section.

Switch to AHCI mode and u'r problems will be gone.

in AHCI mode, there's a increment in burst speed(HDTach) but hibernation/booting times increase by at least 5-6seconds... I learned somewhere that NCQ is implemented only in AHCI mode :S

@OP, suggest some high-quality sata cable.. Even I have the same hdd speed problem(10MB/s while copying movie file between partitions but I think there's due to the multiple read/write in the same hdd). Do try out Teracopy, with the 10mb buffer, I get 30Mb write speed :/
 
Its on DMA If applicable.

I dont see any AHCI option , only PIO and DMA for the Transfer Modes

If you forgot to activate AHCI-mode in BIOS before you installed Windows XP SP2 on one of your SATA drives you will encounter a serious problem if you attempt to switch to AHCI-mode after the installation is already completed: Windows XP SP2 will not start properly anymore.

When you switched to AHCI , did you reinstall windows again as , it seem that windows has problem when switched to AHCI after installing.

Do i need to install the sata drivers provided with the mobo for this to work then.

Cant i stay on IDE + DMA mode , i never checked if the HDD's were running in PIO when the speeds had dropped will check that if it happens again.

On my previous setup(p4 2.8Ghz on i865GBF), I was able to run on ahci without reinstalling windows. There's even a patch for windows xp for ahci setting you know...

@Quad, nah windows won't show you whether its running on ide emulation mode or ahci. its a setting in bios. check it out, enable it and see. Don't worry, nothign will happen to your setup. You can always revert it back to default option if there's any problems.
 
@quadie You arent checking the correct channel.

Your screenie shows NOT APPLICABLE.

Check the other channels.

^^ man ur checking in wrong Channel.
And looking at your device manager screenshot I am very sure u have not installed AHCI drivers. As that many IDE channels can only be if AHCI drivers are not installed.

As marked below. and you will not find AHCI written here. AHCI or IDE is the setting which needs to be done in BIOS not in OS

For installing AHCI drivers.

For Intel chipset its easy. It has in windows AHCI drivers setup. For AMD its a bit tricky.
Either while installing windows press F6 and then feed it with a floppy containing those drivers. or
I have only seen this in Gigabyte 780G board. It has an option of running two SATA ports in IDE mode and rest all in AHCI mode.
This way we can start the windows by connecting the OS HD in IDE port and some drive on SATA port. Installing the southbridge drivers after that worked for me as it found that some new hardware was connected on SATA port so it installed the AHCI drivers.
Restarted the windows and connected the HD to the SATA type ports. Everything worked perfectly then after. And all of this happenned with windows already installed.

I dont know anything specific like this for your Mobo.:hap5:
