I now have a total of 3.5 TB comprised of 4 HDDs i.e. 640GB+640GB+1TB+1TB

In my motherboard all sata ports are full and so the HDD's. I wanted one more hard disk to connect to my cpu (internal).

I had heard that HDD towers are available which can accommodate 4 to 8 HHD's.

Went to SP road today and found that there is no cheap option available for the above problem other than having a external hard disk or a casing. But I would like to have a tower with only one sata or one usb or firewire cable coming out.

The one i found in SP road was

SmartStor from Promise technologies....

But its cost was Rs 26000... which is for network storage....

What i was looking for a simple HDD stand or tower with atleast 4 HDD capacity and using only one of my USB or SATA port.....

There is also one available for internal CPU from coolermaster but it doesn't decrease the requirement of sata ports on the motherboard ... thus it is just a box for the HDD's....
Is any such thing available.......???
 
Why are these things so expensive when single hdd enclosures are available under 1k? Is there some diy solution that is could be cheaper?
 
essentially they are a computer with dedicated processor,memory,embedded operating system, storate controller, some have hardware raid too. All there things costs money.

I would suggest you build new low cost file server by using a old pc.

Alternatively, you buy pci sata cards which give you extra ports in your existing machine, so you plug hdd in same machine

I liked the pci sata card idea..... but still the capacity of the cabinet is also limited.... 4 in my cabinet.... for the extra one i would have to use slots reserved for DVDwriter.... which anyway are 3 now, out of which only i am using only one.....

I had seen a Coolermaster box in SP road bangalore for 2.5k which takes 3 HDD and fits into the area reserved for the DVDwriters.... but this too being just a box is too costly........

Wouldn't it be better if there was something like this..... which should be cheap also.......

I had the above thing in mind before i started searching the HDD tower.........
 
why not buy 2 1.5 TB HDD instead, the HDD towers are not worth the price.

Sata PCI cards are the best bet if you have a little more extra space but any way a normal mid-tower or full-tower cabinet can easily fit 5 hdd's
 
Sell off your older drives and invest in 1.5TB drives. :)

Can't get any cheaper than this. :P
