I have been looking for closure of my HDFC credit card for quite some time as I no longer use it, but despite repeated emails HDFC doesn't seem to be keen on closing it. While calling customer care, as soon as I tell them I want closure of card they put me on hold and disconnect after 1-2 mins.
Any idea as how can I get it closed without major hassles?

RBI notification
See point 8. You can also opt to pay all the dues and not use it for a period greater than 1 year - it will auto-close.

From what I've heard and seen, closing a CC is a very easy process and there are multiple channel to close it. Not sure why you are having a hard time, definitely an exception and not the norm.

Hdfc netbanking has 2 options under the reasons of card closure in netbanking-lost and stolen. Once you select an option , it asks if you'd like to get a replacement. Did you select "no"? If They sent you a replacement inspite of selecting no then this goes to show how far this bank would go to fleece a customer

Honestly I don't remember if selected it as No or not. May be that might have been the issue, so I will try again. Thanks for info.

But closing a credit card will affect your CIBIL score as all the credit score generated with this card will be vanished off. Better you should downgrade your card with any low AMC card. This can be done at your home branch.

Why are people so afraid of cibil scores? You can't even see how it's points are determined. Why spend time thinking about such a useless score I don't understand.
If you want a loan in future, a good credit score helps. Recently friend booked an i10 & got car loan at 8.75% from SBI but the dealer was surprised as he said others got 9%, not below it in recent weeks. The difference was that most others didn't have an active credit score, but my friend uses CCs, so had an active score above 700 (its not 800). That is the only reason we could think of why he got a lower interest rate.

Try here or Contact RM or Go to Branch

I got a card closed by just calling them, once.

Clear all dues and send them an email and make it clear that you want the card closed and are not interested in any offers / renewals / waivers.
They'll send you an acknowledgement and it will be closed in 7 days.

The best option is to call them, as it is quicker. the Branch will usually say to try calling the customer care number, they won't deal with you. I recently closed my ICICI credit card and that was quite easy, just called and told them I wanted to surrender the card, they gave a sales pitch, I said no and they registered the request to cancel. within 24 hours the card was stopped and reflected in my net banking within 36 hours.

Fortunately, I've never had such an experience with HDFC Bank.

Your credit history doesn't go away. All my cards closed till date still reflect in the credit history with their payment status. I have also applied to and closed half a dozen cards in the past year. It swings 30-40 points but is overall higher than a year ago based on recent credit history.

Also, I don't bother calling for card closure. Used the app or website form and for each bank, they have called back once and closed the card within a week. At most, need to send a mail to the nodal officer in case of delay. Finally, if nothing happens, just filing a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman gets things done in a couple of days.
