Hi,

I just tried out my new HDMI 10 meter cable this morning to connect PC to my LG LE4600 47" LED but ..... tried using all the 4 ports of my TV BUT there is just NO AUDIO output.....

MX ADVANCED HIGH SPEED HDMI CABLE 1.4V WITH NYLON MESH 24 AWG & SUPPRESSION CORE - 10 MTR

TEST-BED : i7-3770K | 16 GB RAM
Motherboard : Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H WB Wi-Fi - used the HDMI output port
No GPU as yet on my RIG
Video Files: mkv; mpeg4 etc ..... all at 1920 x 1080p
Media Players used : VLC; Windows Media Player; & Windows Media Player Classic Home Cinema (64bit)
outputted to
LG LE4600 at Full HD settings

Report : Video was fine from all 4 ports tested ....but NO AUDIO

Note:
1. My earlier tests a few days back using my shorter 1.5 mtr HDMI cable v1.3 & everything was OK (except the video field flicker issues which I have yet to resolve)
2. The reason I chose a v1.4 cable over a v1.3 is "future-proof"
3. My LG TV HDMI is v1.3
4. I have used MX cables in the past 12 years or so and find them to be of the highest quality & the above cable that I opted for is also the "best" in their range.

Tests remaining to be done:
Use the same 10 meter HDMI cable to check my two other devices - WDTV Live Hub & The Blu-Ray Player...... If there is still no Audio, then can I suspect a problem with the Audio-relay cable that is inside (cable is faulty) OR

Does HDMI v1.4 have backward compatibility issues (like audio problems) with non 1.4 compliant devices ? :23:

Thanks
Terry

I had limited time this morning as I had to rush to work & will conduct further tests tonight/tomorrow (depending when I get back home) :(

UPDATE:

Got back late tonight... but conducted a small test

Connected to my WDTV Live Hub Media Player .......... CABLE (*Audio*) IS OK (checked with over 7 different movies & 3-4 formats

So ... am flummoxed & tired... Why does it not work with my PC system ?

Will also chek with my blue-ray plarer...2morro

what is windows audio settings and what is the audio out preferences in your media player in pc? i hope i'm right in assuming that you have trouble in getting audio output through the hdmi cable from pc to tv, right?

Ditto mate ..... I am still not able to get "audio output" from my PC to the TV using my HDMI 1.4 cable...... trying to figure it out now.... Video is fine

[All system audio settings are at default] ..... however, I am going through each one of them now .... audio playback/output settings
system sound
windows media player
VLC
MPC-HC-x64

Drivers:
Installed Two (as both chipsets are available on my motherboard) ........ system sound is working from my PC
Creative SB X-Fi MB2 v1.0
Realtek v5.10.0.6642

Going bonkers ...... as the solution lies hidden somewhere in all this maze :23:

can you paste a screenshot of available audio outs in dropdown list in mpc-hc.

Ok here goes....

dunno if this is the right resolution (and decipherable) as I've hardly uploaded any images as yet on TE :( AudioHDMI_003.jpgEDIT: cropped another

1. mpc-hc (audio renderer) -> Tried each (5 and 9) & all the rest too. Negative.
2. ffdshow is installed. How else can I confirm it is there?
3. Default Sound Device - see attached image
INCIDENTLY - IF I CLICK THE TEST PLAYBACK ICON - Then Audio (test signal) is detected/heard from my LG TV

2 - start > all programs> ffdshow audio config. output settings> try the spdif/hdmi options.
another way is to play a movie, right click in mpc-hc > filters > ffdshow audio decoder > properties. check the required hdmi output settings. uncheck connect as pcm first.

EUREKA MOMENT & Thanks @6pack.....
Solution 1 worked - start > all programs> ffdshow audio config. output settings> try the spdif/hdmi options + uncheck connect as pcm first ..... used mpc-hc x64

HOWEVER NEW PROBLEM
1. PC System Audio Sound gets muted (no audio) at the same time
2. If I use VLC Player - I need to go to Audio & chose these settings (see attached images) to get audio onto my LG TV & again PC system sound mutes

another way is to play a movie, right click in mpc-hc > filters > ffdshow audio decoder > properties. check the required hdmi output settings. uncheck connect as pcm first.

Strange ... my mpc-hc does not display ffdshow audio decoder "filter" .... but the advice you gave worked.... see attached images & the changes I made in audio settings

Now is there any way ....
3. I can get both audio [SYSTEM + TV] always ON & not go through these settings each time ..... reason being when I am not at home, my daughter & wife could use either
4. How can I direct audio from the Net (say youtube ) also onto my LG-TV or When Gaming & using the TV as monitor.

ABOVE ALL I FEEL MOST RELIEVED AND THRILLED ...... I can watch my movies directly from PC onto my large screen TV.VLC_AudioOut_LgTV_01.JPGAudioHDMI_008.JPGAudioHDMI_007.jpg

its because you're using 64bit version of mpc-hc whereas ffdshow is 32bit. i may be totally wrong if you have downloaded the 64bit version and using it. then in that case it might not be the preferred filter in mpc-hc settings.

if you bitstream audio over hdmi, pc sound will mute. why do you want sound in pc speakers and tv at same time?

I am not sure if my post is relevant here or it is totally OT but i had read on internet about monster HDMI cables (and other high priced ones) and how they are a rip off. Since HDMI transmits digital signal it does not matter if the cable is 50 Rs or 5000 Rs, the end result is the same. It will either work or not work. I might be wrong and would like to be enlightened.

Edit: Just did some more search and yes high priced cables are rip off.

ffdshow_rev4486_20120825_clsid is what I installed ............. (just downloaded the 64 bit version too). Will test it out

As I said earlier - if my daughter/wife want's to watch a movie on the PC (say using headphones/system speakers) .... then mpc-hc will not output sound as it is now configured for LG TV. And I do not want to keep changing the settings ...... Besides there are times when I download sub-titles and then check it out on the PC itself for lip-sync match..... so at such times why put the TV on.

Why all HDMI cables are the same | Crave - CNET

Yep mate... I did come across a number of such reviews. However, going by experience over the past 25-30 years - back here in India we get stuff from the very ordinary (quality wise) to the highest standards too. For a 10 mtr (33 feet) cable I thot the price per meter of Rs250/- was OK, besides the build quality speaks for itself. I have also seen cheap hdmi cables - where the build sucks. I am not commenting on the signal quality .... but the cheap builds use materials that do not last

Normal length 1.5 meter hdmi's cost 300-550 ..... (Mega Malls like Chroma also have them priced upto 1900 INR !!!!!! for the same 1.5m length).......... and the longer lengths 10mts and above are very difficult to come by. Just my take :)

Currently Display Port cables are a rip-off here (I paid 1200 for a 3 meter cable).

UPDATE:
@6pack ..... Well, well, well

1. I uninstalled ffdshow & well mpc-hc played audio on my TV ???? .... did not do a system restart
2. I installed ffdshow 64bit version ....... audio on TV is fine (but mpc-hc still does not show ffdshow in "filters")

Note: System sound at the same time is unavailable.

Going bonkers ... meanwhile time to sleep. Will do the next tests tomorrow night .....

1. - because mpc-hc or any media player will pipe the stream to the default audio renderer or one which is set to preferred in its settings. say you have 2-3 different audio renderer's for mp3. only one of them can be default at any time. if one of them has higher priority than the other in the media players settings (even if its not default), the player will use that driver which has higher priority.
2 - maybe because its not using ffdshow and using something else.

hdmi and system speakers at same time is not possible since you can output through one port only in players settings.

Oopsie ...... (you confirmed my fears). I guess this is a limitation then that we all have to live by. This is acceptable to me. Getting the audio through HDMI was sufficient ....... Now over to my other thread where 23.976 issues have surfaced..... glitches / flickers on TV.

Will post any further points that are relevant to this thread .... thanks again @6pack

just a question are you using files which are dolby audio encoded? in that case try files which are stereo in audio output.else choose option of downmix dolby to stereo to make them work.
