Hi Guys,

Re: HDMI Wi-Fi Dongle

I stand for correction if my thought processes are skewed or wrong...... So here goes.

Objective : 1080p Wi-Fi/Bluetooth reception on my LED TV routed through my new 3770K RIG by using an HDMI dongle ?

The distance from my new RIG is roughly 8 feet and if cabled (along the walls) then it would run to be 20 feet. Now using an HDMI cable is the easiest option..... but also the messiest. So the quest for a wireless solution.

My TV is LG-LE4600 with a 47" screen, unfortunately it's NOT a DLNA/smart TV...... thus, would this idea still work?

My RIG has got a built-in Gigabyte GC-WB300D wi-fi/bluetooth PCIe card..... [Bluetooth 4.0 & IEEE802.11 a/b/g/n standards compliant & 2 Antennas to support WLAN 2Tx2R transmission]

Here are some possible (perhaps) solutions ...... BUT would it work.

Bring Everything on your Android/PC to HDMI Through Wi-Fi

Thanks
Terry

NOTE: I do not wish to chose a usb based dongle as am not happy with the bandwidth of usb..... [I have noticed playback problems -stutter/freezing of mkv etc files having a bit-rate of 23.5MBps whereas anything upto 13Mbps bit-rate plays smoothly - This is through my WDTV Live Hub & using an external 1/2TB drive that connected to the wdtv thru usb..... the wdtv is connected to my LG TV via HDMI].

I have yet to test my new system's output via HDMI to my LG TV ....... so will update by tomorrow (hopefully)

i am not sure what you should buy, but you shouldnt try streaming 1080p on wifi. it wont work properly from my experience. 720p will work.
for streaming hd i would recommend using cat6 cable.

you want to connect a wifi dongle directly to your tv hdmi or usb port to watch 1080p?

RIGHTO .... (toying with the idea, if it's feasible and workable) :23:, but by using HDMI & not usb

i am not sure what you should buy, but you shouldnt try streaming 1080p on wifi. it wont work properly from my experience. 720p will work.

Cat6 via LAN Port ? As I mentioned, ideally I'm trying to find a wireless solution. Will definately want to dig deeper to find "solutions"

Meanwhile, I am beginning to realise that the issue is not so much to do only with 720 or 1080 - rather how the encoding was done (I have 1080 files that play flawlessly)....when the bit-rate does not exceed 12.5Mbps, same is the case with 720p .... the moment one crosses this "laxman-rekha" in encoding ... then that's where all the problems arise
- usb cables/ports will not handle it properly .... so that's where HDMI comes in or CAT6 & both of which I have yet to explore.

Note: Whatever bit-rate all these files play flawlessly on my new RIG 3770K with just the HD4000 & 16GB RAM .... on my Dell Monitor U2312HM

Will try updating my firmware on the WDTV live hub today..... still it may not help much.

Also I am beginning to see that just a simple HDMI wi-fi dongle "may" not work - it may need to have some good hardware decoding abilities too ...

Dude you simply need those Mini-Android Thumb sized devices.

They cost like $200 -- are the these of PD and have USB n HDMI port. They plugin into the HDMI of your TV and turn it into a "SMART" Android TV.

So simply plug one into your TV and stream media content to it via the many available apps.

If you want to transfer HD video on ur TV screen from your PC. (If I got that right)
Then you can try Netgear Push to TV . It has a HD version also. There are similar products from WD, DLink and Omega. But AFAIK each has got their own limitations like lags is the major concern. So you will need to dig deeper on this one.
As you say your TV and PC are in the same room I would anytime prefer wired solutions rather than WL. but if thats a bit of hassle for you like redoing walls/fittings, etc you can opt for one more solution.
There are these Smart boxes available in the market which turn your TV in a smart TV. One such box is available from LG also. This one is the best I like.
Check out these links.
Smart TV Upgrader ? Make Your TV a Smart TV With Our Smart TV Upgrader

This also gives your TV DLNA and other smart TV features which may not be present on the TV. Since it is LG it can also control other TV functions with its controller.
Hope this helps and I am not offtrack :)

Will look into the Netgear options - however as you said "lags" is very serious and major concern. It is impossible to get a demo of any of these products, so will have to dig deeper to find user feedback.

The LG Option is out as it merely add's "widgets" .... I cannot route my PC thru this. Besides, I already have scores of such widgets thru my WDTV Live hub.

Mini-Android ..... hmmm. I doubt they could handle high bit-rate stuff & esp 1080p content.

Meanwhile, I conducted some tests today & am posting a new-thread

FEEDBACK OF MY ATTEMPT TO CONNECT MY NEW RIG TO THE LG 47" LED TV VIA HDMI CABLE
@6pack & @stormblast ...... could you check the above please

Many vdos are available on Youtube for netgear and dlink devices.
For LG Smart Upgrader forget the widgets, It has DLNA and in built WIFI n band. That solves your problem of streaming HD vdos from your PC to TV.
If you also want to use ur tv as a monitor then its not possible I think.

any links ?

thanks @dexBG .... I have abandoned the quest for an HDMI wi-fi dongle based solution... for the following reasons

  • prohibitive costs - all the good ones are above 10K or more
  • uncertain reviews - esp in handling 1080p of blu-ray uncompressed content
  • did not want to risk spending money without a demo or guarantee of performance

I also came across this yesterday - MX WIRELESS HDMI SENDER for 16K (unfortunately those guys could not give me a demo).

..... and so the SOLUTION I CHOSE (the old fashioned and trusted way )
- an HDMI cable & in this I went in for the best possible quality
MX ADVANCED HIGH SPEED HDMI CABLE 1.4V WITH NYLON MESH 24 AWG & SUPPRESSION CORE - 10 MTR
so got this for Rs2500/-

I could not source any Belkin cables beyond 5 mtrs & did not want to use any HDMI adapter/connector to connect 2 x 5 meter (signal loss & other issues besides being more expensive). I may not like the feel of this long cable along the walls of my hall room...... but gotta live with it.

Will test it over the weekend.

Thanks

Terry, were you able to find any Belkin cables which are 3m and 5m in length? Upon searching all I found was mini-HDMI to hDMI types and not the HDMI to HDMI ones. I was looking for cables which are thin and Belkin had a few cables although they were expensive.

I tried ordering 3 cables from Dealextreme almost a month back but it hasn't reached me yet and I've no clue where the shipment went. :(

Using Cotton Candy, is it possible to actually connect an Xbox 360 controller to the device and play games using Steam Big Picture on the TV, wirelessly? Is it also possible to connect a multi-usb splitter to connect more devices like keyboard and mouse?

Ditto

theitdepot has the widest range of Belkin cables in stock .... and the reason I ruled them out was mentioned earlier.

However by far the largest range of HDMI cables / lengths (going upto 45 mtrs) is with mdrelectronics .... makers of MX cables + a whole lot of adapters to suit every possible scenario..... their website is ancient so the best way to search is to go to their "Quick Links" drop-down list and chose HDMI series. They also have various build combinations - flat / round / black / white / nylon-meshed / right-angled connectors (great for wall mounted units etc)

Incidently, I am encountering a new problem ...... NO AUDIO from this cable & have posed a new thread for this issue .... any HELP would be appreciated
[h=2]HDMI cable BUT NO Audio Output (Video OK)[/h]
Thanks

I know MX since a while and have used several cables and connectors of theirs before. :)

Yeah I was looking at that thread. But I can't think of anything else at the moment other than some issue with the 1.4 version. I haven't used 1.4 cables but from what I know, these have the support for 3D, audio return channels, ethernet and 4K support. All HDMI cables (like most other cables - SATA, USB etc) are backward compatible. But I can't seem to figure out where the issue is.

Did you check with a regular HDMI 1.3 cable when this issue happened? Just to rule out any problem with sound output from the motherboard's HDMI port or from the OS' control panel. If nothing else works out, see if you can get the cable replaced with a regular 10m HDMI 1.3 cable. Since you do not have any 1.4 capable equipment, it is pointless to invest in a 1.4 cable now, the way I see it. And that is quite an expensive one at that!

@Gannu

Not this morning...but a few days back I checked with an 1.5 mtr v1.3 cable & everything was great.

Hate to go back and return this cable ..... if it's some strange 1.4 issue. Regarding price ....well it was the best in their series & works out to be Rs 250 per.meter which is fine by me ..... If I had gone to lammy, I am sure I cud have picked up the same length for 1.5K, however then the "quality" would not have been the same ..... incidently, like I said 2 Belkin Cables of 5 mtr each + the adapter would have crossed 3K ...... :no2:
