headphone help

i am planning to get a pair of decent headphones within a budget of 3k(+1k if worth it).
will be used only indoors, so sound quality is more important than type (by that i mean full sized-open and closed, neckphones, earphones, ear-canal ones etc.) nor do i need noise cancelling.
Sony, philips etc. are out of question at this price (though i owned a Philips HP800 bought for 1.3k for some years and they sounded sublime for the price).
would prefer to go for Sennheiser's as there is an authorised dealer close to my house.
any suggestions? btw, i live in pune, if someone could name some shops where i could find what i am looking for.

how are the HD457? anyone heard those?

HD457 is pretty decent. Its called the boom boom headphone... If you like high almost unnatural bass then this is what you want...

HD485 are definetely better...You wont get the boomy bass and its more balanced.

Indian prices are high.

Edit: But you dont like internet buying do you...

Are you from Mumbai ? If so check out Herra Panna Sound Out for a pair of cans called Pro 2 PH-1000 LE. I have a pair and I absolutely love them ! They sell Sennheisers too and I found these cans better than them easily. The only Senn that was better was the HD 465 which costs around 5k.

The Pro 2 headphones cost around 2.5k. Worth every penny IMHO.

boomy bass is an absolute NO-NO.the sound should be as balanced and natural as possible.

i dont like internet buying due a very bad experience of a friend of mine.

any other suggestions you guys have.

i know that Sennheiser's are overpriced in India (i own a Sennheiser MX450 bought for Rs.1000 and for the sound quality they offer they should ideally be priced closer to Rs.700) , but i guess i dont have much of an option.

just read an interesting article on goodcans.com where the author says that Sennheiser seems to be holding back the sound quality on its sub-$100 headphones so that people buy their more expensive cans; while on the other hand the sub-$100 Grado cans (SR60 and SR80) sound ALMOST as good as most high-end cans.
man, i wish the Grado's were available in India.

A more expensive Sennheiser should ideally sound better (not mandatory mind u) assuming that it is using better internal components one would expect it to sound better. But to say that Sennheiser is holding back the sound quality on sub $100 headphones is rather naive. If that is the case then the same can be said about other brands too.Even i was in ur situation a month back wondering if i shud go for the SR60/80 or Sennheiser.I dont hav hands on exp with Grado but from lotsa a reviews they dont seem to be very comfortable to wear and r better suited for rock music. If thats wat u listen to mostly then maybe Grado's are for u if not Id suggest the HD485.Got these recently for $70 from USA.Awesome clarity, balanced sound.Even movies sound very good on these. But to really appreciate these u gotta plug them into a music system with an Audio CD.I heard sounds that i never heard before and the clarity was crystal clear with no distortion even at higher volumes. To say that im happy with these cans would be a gross understatement.
Phew!I guess ive typed enuf.

just went to the Sennheiser dealer and got a few prices within my budget:
HD415-Rs.3122
HD457-1926
HD202-1530
PMX60-2020
PMX100-2175
PX100-2234
CX300-2361
HD212PRO-3272
HD205-2970
which of these should i go for?

^ of those choices, Vij's HD485 is much better n still is better bang-for-the-buck. And its hardly a couple of months old. I bot a (almost) 2yr old headphone recently and I am truly happy with it. a li'l bit of cleaning (2yrs takes a toll) and voila!

i aint buying vij's HD485, however good the deal may seem. i would prefer a new one to a used one. (anyway, i dont understand what he means by missing jack.)

i have narrowed it down to the CX300 and PX100.
which of these is better?

I dont have the cord...thats what I mean...

I have used it just couple of hours...you heard me right...Its sound is not even broken-in...

I have kept it in the shelf for 6 months...thats how old it is...but its a virgin...:P
Instead of paying 3k for the HD415 u might as well go and buy Philips 805 or something...

@ananth

PX-100 and PMX-100 are essentially the same..the latter are more sporty and have a different design..

that said, The PX-100's are one of the best value headphones out there..in the sub-$100 category its hard to beat them for VFM..

i've read many reviews in PX-100's favor from regular users and audiophiles alike..and at that price, they definitely seem worth it..

the only gripe might be the fact that they are Open cans..ppl around can more or less listen to wat u r listening to..

I use the PX100s for OTG music, paired with my iRiver or my sister's iPod. Excellent sound quality, but yes, as my fellow baniaji mentioned, it is open.. people around you can hear the music you're tuning in to.

Highly recommended.

hv heard px100.....

it is a gr8 phone only when u consider the fact that other headphones are costly...so dont expect anything too big....otherwise, one shld be more than happy to have these

plus the price u listed for px100 is more or less the same as international pricin...so u can buy from here

and pls check ur pm

(though i owned a Philips HP800 bought for 1.3k for some years and they sounded sublime for the price).
in that case ask someone who hv tried both for a comparision....might be a btter idea
