Health insurance for parents

I've zeroed in Star Health Insurance - Red carpet for my parents.Separate ones for mom and dad.My dad was hospitalized a few months ago.He had to go through an Angioplasty. This might come out as a noob question but should I declare the medical history to the company? If I declare , then the price could shoot up or they could refuse to provide Insurance I think. If I dont, will they find out any way?If I dont declare and god forbid, land in a situation where in future I have to claim an insurance, they might refuse to right(since the hospital report would tell them that he had that ailment earlier). There is no medical test that this company runs, AFAIK but since he is above 60 they might run a health check. He has other ailments like diabetes and has undergone a knee operation.

There is no way you can hide anything from these guys and then expect them to pay up your insurance claims. You will have to declare the complete medical history. Sure enough, it will increase the premium very much. Am sure the company will run a battery of tests, especially given his age.

Dont be under false impression that being no medical check up they cant find out.

There are doctors associated with insurance company. And in future whenever treatment arises the doc will give medical prescription taking into account past history of the patient and since angioplasty done he will give medicines keeping that in mind.

Than later when you go to insurance company for claim they will verify medical prescription with their associated doc who will easily make out following medicine was given keeping past treatment in mind. That way easily they will refuse claim .

IRDA have become too strict these days .ALso these days they want patient to inform insurance company within 24 hours when admitted and also within 24 hours when discharge that way they can keep tab on both patient and hospital in falsifying claim.

Ill suggest do give all correct details. Also if you have any more mediclaim insurance do inform the comapny as some of them refuse claim especially in life insurance. Not sure about mediclaim.

Hope this helps.

Also do give details like how much are they charging what are the riders an all other details for our reference.

Your father underwent coronary angioplasty I presume. If so, there is no confirmatory test (other than coronary angiography) to detect previous h/o plasty and I highly doubt any insurance company will do that.

As everyone said, you should declare everything, but remember these companies are big thieves and try to deny even legitimate claims.

When I was in clinical medicine I have seen many genuine claims got denied.

I myself did not declare certain things while getting health insurance for my mother, and those clowns (doctors from TPA)could not find anything.

Called up the Star health customer care.

Red carpet insurance for dad.Advantages - Premium(about 17k since he is 62) will be the same every for the rest of his life.No hike there. No medical test.Even if he has existing ailments, premium doesn't change.Very wide network(seems true since it covers most hospitals in my hometown which other companies dont).

A different premium for my mother since she is not above 60.First one can be above 3 lakhs but requires medical test.Second one doesn't require medical test but insurance covers upto 3 lakhs only.

Covers upto 70% of charge for pre declared ailment and 50% for non-pre declared ailment.Covers every charge like doctor's fees, room rent, medicine etc.seems pretty good to me.what do you guys think.Only hiccup is that payment has to be upfron, no emi option.

Is cashless facility available?Do they cover service charges?(this thing can be huge in corporate hospitals)Ask them particularly about the maximum allowable room rent, doctor`s fees, investigation charges.

They usually have a lot of terms and conditions in small prints and some of them are really unacceptable.

I remember one particular policy..it stated the max.allowable investigation charge is 75k..but max daily allowance for investigation was 20k or something.

Suppose I have the policy and got admitted and the doctors asked for a battery of blood tests and a couple of MR scans on admission, which cost more than 20k I have to pay it from my pocket even if my total allowance was far more!!

Cashless facility is available.Dunno about the service charges. No info about the maximum allowable limit for room rent and investigation charges too. will check and post back.

So if the fee had been 25k, wasit not possible to pay 5k and get 20k reimbursed?
