Hi, I have an 3000+ Newcastle (S754). My idle temps are ~ 41C which is fine by me. But my load temps go upto 57C .

These temps are with my cabby closed. When open the load temps are ~ 54C. I have an 80 mm cabby fan. What else can I do to lower these temps. I want to keep my current CPU / Mobo for at least 3 years, so need the temps to reduce.

I have currently overclocked the 3000+ from 2000 Mhz to 2445 Mhz on stock volts (1.5V) and stock A64 cooler.

1) Get a cheap cabinet with facilitates good air flow like for e.g. 2 80 mm fans for intake and exhaust respectively, or 1 120 mm fan each for intake and exhaust.

2) Do simple and effective cable management.

3) if the above two reduces the temps to something with which you are comfortable for e.g. 46 ~ 48C on load then fine else go in for a good cpu h/s with a proper application of thermal compound like AS5.

Thanks for the reply. I will see what I can do about the cable management. Also will changing the back fan to a high speed fan from a good brand like Vantec or Antec help ? Also 47C on load is fine for me.

I have decided to work with the cabinet open for now. So load temps are abt 52C. How much will Artic Silver bring down the temps ? Also if I decide to go for a cheap decent HSF cooler, abt how much will it cost me ?

@BF1983 - I have almost a similar setup as yours, except that am running a K8N instead of K8NE. I've recently swapped the stock hsf for a XP-90/Vantec 92mm combo. The idle temperatures are like 32-33C and load temperatures go upto 39/40C [closed cabby]. Am running a 245Mhz overclock.
If you are on a tight budget, you can try lapping the stock hsf to a mirror finish before applying AS5 ( SunnyBoi says lapping the hsf reduces temps by like 1C ).

Lap the h/s only if you have the correct (very fine)sandpaper....i.e. 1600 ~ 2000 grit papers. otherwise there is a greater chance of ruining the base of the h/s and getting worse temps in the bargain .....

lapping and getting only 1C reduction is not worth the effort imho ...unless you get 3~5C reduction there is no point in lapping .....
@BF1983 , instead of spending huge sums on antec or Vantec ...it is better you get some cheap 80mm sunon's or chinese made brands for around Rs. 40 each ...

What were the temps earlier ? Isn't the higher limit for the Newcastle cores greater than the ones for Winnie and Venice cores ???? Still, have u just tried removing the HSF, cleaning it and putting it back ?? There is a possibility that there is dust clog in the HS which is responsible for the higher temps.

Thanks Deejay, Vignesh and Freaky for your replies. I removed my cabinet and cleaned everything.

However I also removed my HSF and the processor was stuck to the heatsink ! Even with the CPU lock on !. I tried removing it but it wouldnt budge. Since I coulnt reinsert it without detaching it, I used a metalic ruler to remove it. Unfortunately it fell down and damaged the pins.

My heart was in my mouth, but I managed to realign the pins using the ruler and tried to reinsert it. Thankfully it was a success and the computer booted up without problems.

Idle temps are now 36C and load temps are around 49C after Sisoft Sandra burn-in test(100% CPU load). This is close to what I want. But I want to overclock the PC furthur than 2450.

@Vigesh - How much did you pick up the XP-90 for ? And where ?

@deejay - I wasnt going to pick up the expensive fans. I was planing on this fan - http://cgi.ebay.in/ANTEC-COOLING-PRO-80mm_W0QQitemZ6841082770QQcategoryZ80146QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is cheaper than the Vantec 80 mm fan and it has a better Volumetric Airflow of 34 CFM. And best of all, it comes with a 3 year warranty. I already have a cheap fan there right now. I want to better one to reduce the temps.

Also by how much will the temps reduce if I use Artic Silver 5 ?

Now I have upped the speed to 2475 Mhz at stock volts !

Just ran the Sisoft Sandra Burn in test for 40 minutes without hanging. Will keep this configuration for abt 2 - 3 weeks before moving any furthur.

Checked the temps were the same - no increase. 50C was the max reached during the burn in. But still want to get a better cabinet fan to bring down the temps by abt 3 - 4 degrees.

Ok after a lot of deciding on what to do, I decided not to go for an expensive HSF for the processor as I dont game very often. So I have thought of buying this Antec fan -

Should I go for it or is there any better fan at around that price. I currently have some el cheapo cabinet fan and I want a better one.

So which fan do you suggest ?

TE Gurus , a little help please ! Should I buy this fan or get Arctic Silver 5 ? I saw that the original heat compound had come out a little when I opened up the cpu.

Or do you suggest anything else.

Im running it below stock speeds at 266 mhz at 2-3-2-6 1T at 188 mhz. Im currently burning in the new Kingmax ram.

Only when my processor temps are stable and Im confident that I have reached my max overclocking potential of my processor on stock volts will I overclock the ram.

@BF1983 - I had got the xp90 through my friend in the US. You could try what deejay mentioned about doing some simple cable management.
Check this link to sleeve your PSU Sleeving DIY style - I did it to my PSU and it has reduced a lot of clutter within the cabby. It should also help in improving the ventilation.
As you have taken out your processor already, I would suggest you try applying AS5 and allow it cure. It should definitely bring down peak temperatures due to better heat dissipation.
And btw Newcastle cores hit a brick wall at about 2.5Ghz right?

I have decided to get a cheap HSF from a good brand like Thermaltake, Asus etc. But till I save enough to buy the HSF I will try the cable management you specified.

Also I will think about the Artic Silver 5 tube. That costs abt 900 bucks while a decent HSF will be available for around 1.5- 2k.

Oh and this newcastle can hit abt 2645 ! Here is a screenie. Dont ask me how this happened. I tried overclocking before and couldnt get it over 2400 mhz !

Stable as rocks falling down a mountain ! :bleh: I was meerly testing the limits of the processor, not to have a stable overclock. In fact I reached 2657, but I never had time to save the screenshot after pasting it to paint. Also I reached this speed at stock cooling.

But I had reached a stable overclock of 2620. Well stable for about an hour at least. At that time my load temps were arnd 52C which were astronomical then. Now at 2450 the load temps are also abt 50C !

Rs. 900/- !!! for AS5
i can give it to you much, much cheaper since chic_magnet would not be in a position to collect his reserved piece(s) anytime soon .... pm me if you want one .....
