I built a new a rig with following config..

i7-920
Asus Rampage 2 Extreme
Corsair TR3X3G-1333C9 3GB Kit
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme
Scythe S-Flex 120mm @ 63.7cfm
Palit GTX 260 sonic
500Gb Seagate 7200.12 HDD
CoolerMaster CM690 with transparent side panel
Coolermaster M600
When the system is idle, it isgenerally at 45-46C but when I play a game like Far Cry 2 at full resoultion it heats upto 54-55C.
When I exit the game, it returns back to its idle temperature in just 1-2 mins.

Is my Heat Sink working fine or any suggestions to improve it??
I m using the motherboard software to monitor the temp.

Config of HS is as:
|
|
| <-----Exhaust <------ HS <---HS Fan
|
|
|

back panel of cabinet

Thanks

Idle temperature shouldn't be that high if you have such a good CPU cooler.Either your heasink isn't mounted correctly or thermal paste isn't applied properly. Also is the system overclocked?

well the idle temperatures are quite high , i think the contact is not proper between the heatsink and the processor.

search google and you will see that true doesn't have the best of finishes and also intel processors are also either convex or concave

that's why people lap their true and their processor to achieve a full contact between the heatsink and the processor.

however lapping the processor will void it's warranty . but if your processor is neither concave or convex then lapping the heatsink might be the answer to your trouble

for lapping search google . many overclocking forums have complete guides to it

Its not Oced..
Ambient temperature is around is 30-32C.
I also feel that something is wrong with the temp. software because the reading keeps jumping ....
eg. First it will show 45 then it will jump to 53 for 1 sec then again comes back to 45...

First I used the paste that came with thermalright..when i got high temp. I replaced with the intel thermalpaste...
I tried to lap the heat sink... But its difficult to lap the heat sink with sand paper.....

When used Real temp today, I got following results when idle..
Core 0: 42C
Core 1: 43C
Core 2: 45C
Core 3: 39C
GPU : 50C

Today the ambient temp was around 28C...

I am facing the same issue with my proccy though mine is E8500 along with P43 gigabyte mobo and sapphire 4850 gpu.

My idle temperature is around 45-47*c where as on load it goes to 56-60*C which to me is not normal as my Phenom 9650 use be 35-38*c full load.

Same is the case with my GPU(ATI 4850) at idle its around 50-55*C where as on load it goes to 62-70*C with fan speed at 65%

I did long FFT test using Prime95 for 30 mins.
The ambient temp. was around 32C.
The average core temo became steady at 72C

Is my heat sink working fine? or do i need to reseat it ?
whats the normal curng time for thermal paste?

Apply some Arctic silver 5 thermal paste and then reseat the heatsink. If you are not sure how to do it then watch some videos on youtube about thermal paste application.

temp is fine , get a higher CFM fan for TRUE like scythe kaze jyuni 110cfm or delta 120cfm , temps will come down further .

I have ordered the following

Scythe Slipstream 120mm @ 110 CFM x2 (for the HS)

Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm @ 133.60 CFM x1

Artic Cooling MX-2

I guess it will do..
