CPU/Mobo Heatsink removal question

I own a Dell Studio XPS 7100 desktop and want to remove the heatsink to reapply thermal paste. I was going through the manual when I came across this:

CAUTION: When you remove the processor fan and heat sink assembly, lay it upside down or on its side to avoid damaging the heat sink thermal interface.

What does this mean? Do I need to remove the motherboard from the case, tilt it upside down and then remove the heatsink? Is that really necessary? :/

EDIT: Dumb of me. Please delete this thread.

it means dont keep the heatsink so that the flat conducting interface that remains in contact with the processor touches the floor etc so as not to scratch or dent it(as it will trap air bubble and over heat the processor)
