Hello from Nepal!

Hi guys!

I've just registered on TE. Heard too many good things about it while on ThinkDigit Forum. And I must say I am not dissapointedd.

A little about myself..
My name is Bikalpa Paudel. I am Nepalese by birth, by origin and by everything. If you have been wondering that my name sounds like 'vikalp' in hindi, then I must tell that it has the same meaning. However, the way of pronouncing them is different in Nepali. Its Bikalpa, 'pa' to be pronounced like U in 'cut'. :)

I am studying MBBS in Dharan, Nepal. I have many Indian colleagues here who have come from neighbouring states of India.

I am here to discuss technology and widen my own technological horizons, looking forward to a good time here.

Oh, and I am a Mac user BTW. :P

well i m also a Doc - finished my MBBS last year only

Aeons ago, before the cable revolution, We used to turn our TV antenna towards birganj to watch the Hindi movies that would run on Nepal TV on Saturday (or was it Sunday?) evenings

Watching all those Nepali ads made me reasonable fluent in the language (alas, I have forgotten most of it now)

Although I still rememebr some of the jingles (Rara Chow Chow, Dabur Lal Dantmanjan & the Masterji with insanely bad teeth are a few that come to mind) :D

Yeah, I spent considerable time watching Hindi movies.
Bollywood has been a big business and the movies were fun. Besides, Hindi movies are much easier to understand and palatable to Nepalese audience.
But we don't have those anymore, Nepali movie release frequency caught up and now its mostly them. Sometimes it does air good ones tho.

BTW I know you from TDF. Actually I once posted your guide to make a low-cost linux server there. My username there is: IronManForever (kinda lame)..
 
And the movies aired on Saturday, our public holiday!

I already posted on the roll call. I was attracted by the Mac user base and population here (apart the detailed forum sections and a good number of intelligent people around). Its weird to see hackintosh usrs tho, after all the restrictions one has to face on TDF.
 
I also knw some Nepali [ Not exactly polite words ] :rofl:

Learnt when i was young , some people used to play volley ball at a ground near my place .. one team used to say everytime they lost a point :P

Ha, i was kinda guessing that it's you...

Actually you do get RaRa in supermarkets in most supermarkets in India too

The only FU is that it's the same package you get there with the same 10/- retail price, but the buggers here charge you 10 INR for that (although it's definitely worth that much :P )

I grew up in a small town close to the Nepal border and back in the day, a day trip to Nepal (or an extended trip to Kathmandu) was something I always looked forward to esp. since Nepal was THE place to lay your hands on electronic gizmos in the pre-economic liberalization India days

I never was a fan of rara/maggi kinda noodles. But they work out really really good as a Meal, when you are hungry.

You might be knowing about Wai Wai / 2PM. These are the actual 'Chow Chow's of Nepal. Not everybody find them good, but its kinda regular snack for us. Of course, you cant compare that to Lays and stuff.

You are absolutely correct. But that doesnt hold true anymore! :(

I'm just too frustrated looking at the pace of IT development here.
Maybe thats just because I spend a lot of time on Indian forums and compare it to India.

You never get high end hardware here. You never get the right price. ATi 4850 1 GB was retailing at 25,000 IRs in Katmandu. Lame!

The market is flooded with unbranded chinese crap. Actually in the golden days, Chinese products were superior to products from elsewhere, say India. Thats the impression I get from elders. Thats the time you could get good stuff out here. But I find it hard to believe. Its like overturned now.

Internet penetration is really pathetic. Very few players, and the main player Nepal Telecom doesnt care since it has 'little' to 'no' competition.

Earlier, Nepal had to buy dedicated Satellite channels, making Internet very expensive. Recently, after Optical fibre linkages were made with India, broadband via ADSL has started making appearance. And I'm so grateful. Its not like we begged tho, the bandwidth has been bought in accordance to the agreement made with BSNL.

There is not one technology dedicated forum that has taken off well. And it pisses sometimes. But then I rejoice at the fact that I have an opprtunity out here. And I am thinking of making a Techno Blog and Forum.

Hmm.. maybe its getting boring for you guys. :)
