Folks,

I haven't owned a digital camera ever before, it was only those measly phone cams i have been using all this while :bleh:

Thinking of getting a decent digital camera for basic needs, nothing extravagant

Budget: 4 to 6K

Decent megapixel and optical zoom

Great looking pictures at 640*480 (don't need more bigger than that)

Nice colors

Good video recording option

Good warranty options (2 or 3 years)

Please suggest all options available and their market prices. I have completely no clue where to begin

Also suggest some good digicam review sites

Thanks in advance. All suggestions welcome

at 4 to 6k price u will get any brand cam with 5.1 to 8.1 MP resolution now:)

but the fact is "megapixel" count wont help with fine, sharp pictures its simply depend upon the lens, image processing algorithm...

dont do any research for this, in my experience Nikon, Sony, Olympus (pls follow the order) is best for value + performance u can get their basic models at 6k price range:hap2:

Nikon-
pros: def best quality pictures guaranteed, top natch video quality!
cons: little bit expensive, time between two shots little laggy, not that much features wen compared to sony.

Sony-
pros: Many features, decent Image quality with nice colours, very fast & carl Zeiss lens.
cons: infact i cud not find anything bad in sony, at this price range def its ur pick i think:hap2:

Olympus-
pros: very cheap, decent image & video recording quality.
cons: slightly washed out colours, not top natch lens, poor image quality under low light conditions.

i did not mention the model names, bcoz i own all three brands all r mid-high end models:)

To cut the hype- I personally believe the best Digicam deal at present for a very competent digicam is
PANASONIC LZ10 DIGITAL CAMERA with 3 YEARS Panasonic WARRANTY
it has 30mm wide angle with 5x optical zoom LEICA Lens-
an Intelligent Auto mode with manual adjustments-and a great LCD display- best is- it uses 2 nos AA batteries- and in mine- 2 NiMH cells give 300 shots in use with me for more than three months-extremely good results.
eBay India: PANASONIC LZ10 DIGITAL CAMERA + 3 YEARS WARRANTY (item 170377806689 end time 07-Sep-2009 13:50:58 IST)
if possible use a ebay coupon to get something off.

I have a Lumix FS3, and the image quality is pretty good. Its a nice little camera and gives good photos outdoors and indoors. Video recording feature is present, and quality is also decent. But you cannot use zoom while recording, and the native video format is quicktime (as against the more common mpeg). If you can live with these, it is a decent entry-level ultra-compact camera.

Since I have not used LZ8, I cannot say for sure which one is better. Please check the comparison link.

Thanks Dennis :)
How is the video quality, is it very clear with good brightness and colors
What about LZ10 - how is video recording in that, any idea

I am looking at Panasonic FS3 and LZ10 (3 years warranty and all good things I have heard about them)

Is LZ10 worth the 1K more

FS3 - li-on chargeable
LZ10 - AA Ni-Mh
Which is better option, batteries or charger pack. It will be sparsely used and few videos taken at a time

Guys, pour in with your suggestions :hap2:

Video quality of FS3 is pretty good - good clarity and colors in well-lit environments, but not so good in low-light conditions. Actually, I was all set to buy LZ10, but my wife opted for the sleeker FS3 (it was meant to be a gift). Based on features, I suppose LZ10 would be somewhat better, but cannot vouch for it.

If you need to use the camera all the time (meaning you cannot miss any moment, and dont know when you will need to shoot and want to be ready for that), it is better to go for a camera that takes AA batteries. Of course you will need to invest in a set of rechargeable batteries and charger. That way you can always have spare AA's pre-charged. For me, it was OK to have the li-ion battery which I charge as needed. FS3 battery gives me around 260-270 shots on one charge.

Thanks again dennis, that was pretty useful :hap2:

Guys, please come with your suggestions / comments on
FS3 and LZ10

and any other better choices to these
