Help deciding SLR/P&S cam in 500USD in US

My cousin is in US and want to buy a SLR/Point and shoot. He needs the best VFM cam in 500USD.

We are noobs at SLRs and need your inputs
For the point and shoot we are considering the Fuji HS 20 or the sony 30X zoom model.

Any links to the suggested item on amazon would really help us.

Is 500USD for both the PS and the SLR? Or is it 500 each? If you have a big budget for the P&S, look no further than the Canon Powershot S95, or the G12.

SLRs, other people would be able to give better advice methinks.
 
Buy a mirrorless Camera ,it can satisfy your urges for P&S and DSLRs.

Panny GF2 ,Olympus Pen EPl2 i may suggest for your dollars,or save your dollars and get Sony Nex from India.

Cameras are cheaper in India.

sony cameras come with 3 year india warranty unline any others.
 
If you want an point and shoot go for the canon s100, nothing beats the s100 best enthusiast compact out there.

If you want a dslr but you think you are not ready, than have a look at mirror-less cameras you can either pick olympus E-PM1 or E-PL1.

All of these cameras are under 500$, do not go for bridge camera's they are good for nothing.
