i want to upgrade my sound system. my budget is 1 lakh and i want to buy an av reciever and 7.1 speakers.

I live in delhi and would like to know the shops which can provide demo for audio products.

i have been following balas thread and would like to know where i can find similar products around delhi and at what prices.

also is it advisable to buy such products through grey market or kmd ?

:sos: need help....

How about saving the dough and buying Azuntech PreLude with Z5500? This is not a suggestion. Just a thought. I have heard so many times that if we have a good sound card with good speaker system it beats the hell out of a high end expensive home theatre system !

Z5500 will get its posterior kicked by even an entry level 25k wharfedale let alone something costing 100k.

Anyway coming to the point, I'd say get a Marantz SR4001 and a Wharfedale Diamond 9 HT consisting of the Diamond 9.1 fronts, Diamond 9 center, 9.0 rear and SW150 subwoofer. Will fit in your budget rather easily. You can also look at the Monitor Audio Bronze HT setup.

^ Duh! That's pretty basic.

I'd suggest you cut out the 7.1 idea and get a 5.1 setup and spend a bit more on the receiver. The newer Marantz SR 5002 will do great and decodes plethora of formats including all your HD Audio formats a Blu-Ray player will throw at it.

7.1 is pretty unnecessary, a good 5.1 setup is immersive enough.

Get better fronts also, you can always flick the Stereo switch on the Marantz for a nice 2.1 setup that'll handle your stereo music needs well.

-1 to 7.1. I have a 7.1 steup. for one , 7.1 sources are very hard to get hold of, and even when you do there isnt much diffrence....

I would suggest keeping aside 10K for getting the speakers professionally setup along with some basic room treatment.
And if it were me, another 10k for buying CDs :p

I say lose the extra pair, buy the lowest end bookshelves(9.0 in this case) for the rears , and spend the most of your cash on the fronts :D

Maybe- depends on what you term as "good" and how good the speakers are in the first place itself. :)
And most "good" speakers will need good amps to drive them. :P
So in the end- one ends up doing the same as all above are trying to do- just budgets vary.

Else it sounds like saying- a good composer/musician/music director has to be a good singer?
Auzen Prelude+Z5500 may sound like 'Anu Mallik+Amrish Puri+Sunny Deol' in chorus you know.

And in hi-end audio, something is not right with your ears if one didn't go over the actual budget.
Or simply, one didn't look/research/demo enough.
So a simple rule i followed is to start looking at 70-75% of what i afford- i finally restrict myself at 105-110% of what i had begun with.
And it still is a win-win situation either ways- if you find something at 100% of your budget or lower or something just beyond it. :P
Please don't take my comments too seriously- i am the official n00b on TE. :P

hmmm dunno how helpful and accurate this info is ..but i read this exact same article in todays Hindustan Times's Cafe Plug and Play section..

it is about setting up your own mini home theater.

Tech2.com India > Home Theater Fundamentals: Part 2 > Features > HiFi & TV > Home

they also described a guy's setup who spent 25 lakhs on his dream HT :O.

Tech2.com India > The Ultimate Home Theater: Episode I > Features > HiFi & TV > Home Theater Systems

^^the Acoustics, lightning and all looks good too.

i do not know anything about Yamaha but i've heard a lot about marantz

let Chaos reply he would know

Yamahas are essentially meant only for HT. They have stunning dynamics but very poor musicality. So essentially if all you do is watch movies day in day out and don't intend to listen to music at all, get a Yam. Else avoid at all costs.

regarding buying from the grey market part, I myself bought my Marantz (genuine box pack) from the grey market from Chandni chowk. Initially i was skeptical about buying from the grey market but then when i compared the price difference i took the risk and went ahead and bought.

So if you are willing to pay for the product (which ever you buy) with warranty and peace of mind just go ahead and buy it. The same product can be bought from the grey for almost 35% reduced price (this is almost equivalent to the USD price) from the Indian MRP.

I dont suggest buying AVR from online sources coz shipping costs will be high. For demo you can also check-out the Cinebells in metropolitan mall, gurgaon, they stock Denon and Jamo and were planning to get Marantz also (this was 2 years back).

Sharda motors stock Boston Acoustics, Mordaunt Short, Nakamichi, Marantz and Denon.

If you are planing for Onkyo i suggest the TX-SR605/606 costing around 37k approx. They had a showroom at CR park but I think they closed after the sealing spree in Delhi.

That marantz 4001 is ~23k in grey here, the v663 is full-on movies, no music, as Chaos dada pointed out. I've got an Onkyo, slightly better than the Yammy for music, but the Marantz 4001/4002 are better all rounders. I've got a quote for 48k for the Q Acoustics 1010i set from Bangalore, they've gotten excellent reviews all over the web as well. Planning to get these or the Wharfedale set.
