My PCs giving me some problem.

When i push the power button, the fans come on but then they stop in about 2-3 seconds and then the pcs off again.

The monitor does not come on with the mobo logo in these 2-3 seconds (it normally would flash the asus p5k premium logo on startup)

Can y'all help me identify if its a mobo or a psu issue?

It's a psu issue mostly, try using another psu and post your rig details,if you don't have another psu then test your psu as shown in the video-

probably psu.....

I faced similar problem once. Turned out it was due to broken cooler claps(that's what they are called right?). Bought new cooler and Arctic Silver paste.

I was facing exactly similar issues couple of days back, in my case PC did power up but after multiple attempts, 5-6 attempts. I replaced my PSU and everything is working fine now. I suspect ur PSU to be the faulty component.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Truly appreciate. I will be testing my psu over the weekend and let y'all know.

UPDATE

I tested the PSU as per the above video and the fan came on.

So i connected my mobo back to the psu and what i observed is that the fans start and they stop again but this goes on happening. The fans come on and off as if in a loop. Also the mobo doesnt make a beep sound like it normally did earlier.

Any test to see if the fault is with the mobo?

yes.. there might be a problem on the motherboard.. this type of restarting behaviour you mentioned might by due to loose ram sticks. due to this, the computer fails to boot and keeps restarting as it has no memory to load the files.. try removing the RAM, clean it, blow a little air into the slots and push them back properly inside.. and then try.. if you have multiple ram sticks, also try using one of them and see if the prob. is resolved.. and if you have only 1, then try changing the slot. and with 2 sticks, try interchanging the slots..

and do one more thing, remove the cmos battery for about 10 to 15 seconds and put it again. this way you will clear the bios settings to factory default. and then try restarting again.

if it still doesnt happen lemme know..

After removing the cmos battery for 10 sec and putting it back again, the computer booted but within 3 mins of coming on, it again just went off.

now everytime I put it on, I can see the bios flashing but by the time it reaches the windows boot screen, the pc just completely shuts down.

did you also have to do the RAM thing??? and did the computer boot up fully?? windows loaded and everything???

what you need to know is, even if theres some prob. with your fans, within 3 mins. the cpu doesnt reach its max. temperature threshold and just power off to protect itself.. theres definitely some other problem unrelated to the PSU. if it had been a problem of the PSU, your pc wouldnt have boot up because of the CMOS battery being removed.

and are you sure you dont have any kind of viruses on your pc??? viruses can even srew up the computer to restart and shutdown randomly as well as eat up all your cpu till it starts frying itself.. thankfully, nowadays all the systems have a safety cut off temperature limit..

experiment one more thing.. remove your harddrive and clean the connectors and everything.. just a measure. .theres 99% chance this is not the cause of the problem..

and next time your computer starts booting, go into your BIOS menu and stay there.. ..keep staying there and see if your computer still restarts or shuts down.. if it does not, then there might be some virus problems on your pc. and beware, viruses are even capable of destroying the master boot record of your harddrive and also the hardwired firmware of your BIOS. till the time any virus stays in its pants and keeps ****ing the OS, its fine.. you can just format it.. but if it srews up your BIOS firmware, your motherboard will be dead..

and if it still shuts down, then its some hardware issue.. this way you will just be able to confirm what the problem is and narrow down your doubts..

I think u might be close to the reason for why this happened.

A few days back, I was surfing online when suddenly my wifi adapter got disabled and my computer automatically shut off.

When I tried to reboot, it would get stuck at the windows loading screen and then flash a blue screen for a sec and then again try to reboot.

I realized this was a virus attack and formatted my primary harddisk and reinstalled windows on it (I have 3 more hdd).

After reinstalling windows the computer worked properly the first time I booted it. It was on for about 10hrs and no issues.

The second time I put it on, it reached the desktop screen and within 2 min its froze...since then I was facing the booting problem where the fans would come on and off like in a loop.

I tried staying in the bios menu for 2 min and the pc shut down itself!!!

Does this mean I have a dead mobo?

see. the wifi adapter getting disabled automatically is a very common virus problem.. its been bugging my bros lappy for a long time now.. but i think its just screwed altogether..

as you mentioned you've got 3 HDD's, theres no point just formatting one. as soon as you boot up and windows detects all the HDD's, its gonna copy all the viruses to every drive. .thats why its called a virus.. coz it spreads on its own .like a biological virus.

Now one last step to do before i exhaust all my logic and understanding..

Disconnect the 2 extra HDD's and put em aside. now remove the Cmos battery so that the BIOS is reset again.. now format your primary HDD. .and i mean completely wipe it off. no partitions nothing. just delete all partitions. .no data to be kept.. and format your HDD. quick format is fine.. no need to do thorough formatting. now install windows. and after that, dont install any of the hardware drivers. just plain windows.. and then see what happens.. for how long the computer stays fine..

if it works fine with just windows without any drivers installed , it might be that a certain hardware might be causing issues.. a good chance that it might be your graphics card if you've one otherwise the onboard display adapter.

then what you need to do is install 1 driver at a time, put your comp. under observation, if it works fine, then go ahead with the next driver. this way, if a particular hardware is causing issues you will know as soon as you restart your comp. after installing the driver for that hardware.

plz also try borrowing one of your friends RAM and see if the problem persists. infact try this step before trying the above steps. and also use your RAM on your friends comp. this two way crossing will confirm that if theres a problem related to this area, then whether your RAM is faulty or the RAM slot on your mobo is faulty..

I know all this is exhausting. you might even be thinking whos gonna go through such headache..but if i am not able to find a solution to a problem upfront, this is how i go about analyzing and eliminating possibilities to keep getting closer to the prob.

even if your prob. is unrepairable, doing all this will atleast increase your understanding for future probs. and you will be able to better guess what might be causing a problem.

i mentioned the RAM thing again because sometimes it might happen that the RAM might be malfunctioning after some time due to heat or any other issue..

@ripesoul

I seriously suspect ur PSU is causing the issues. I would suggest arrange for PSU and boot ur system with that PSU before formatting any of your hard drives. As I mentioned earlier my system was exhibiting very similar symptoms as yours and I went through all the steps of removing and changing RAM, clearing CMOS etc, considering that mobo is faulty, but the actual culprit turned out to be PSU. Once I replaced the PSU, everything is working fine now.

Hi buddy, don't try to restart your PC too many time otherwise good and working components may get damaged.

The symptoms you stated are common for a PSU which is damaged. Check with a spare one for a couple of days if your system should works fine.

It is 90% PSU, get it RMAed if in warranty or get a new one.

Hope it helps.
