Help in choosing mid-end droid phone

Dark Star

ex-Mod
Well I am planning [not really atm buying] to get an android phone. Since I am a student I don't really need off the shelve and out of box multicore processor or some gimmicky stuff that adds to the price, what I am looking for is -

1. Q: Budget?

A: 15-20k

2. Q: Preferred Form Factor(flip, bar, slider)?

A: Bar

3. Q: Preferred display type?

A: TFT / LED / AMOLED

4. Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them.

A: None in particular

5. Q: Preferred input method (Touchscreen, QWERTY, etc.)?

A: Touchscreen

6. Q: Camera required or not? If required, please specify type like front camera/flash/etc.

A: Required at least 5MP camera. Flash. With better sensors.

7. Q: Preferred operating system? (Android, Symbian, iOS, Windows Phone etc).

A: Android.

8. Q: Preferred connectivity options? (3G, Wifi, Edge etc).

A: 3G. / Wifi/ GPS/ Bluetooth

9. Q: What is your intended use for this phone(internet, camera, multimedia, mails, etc)?

A: Music, Sports - Tracker, Reading , Application development.

10. Q: Any other requirements?

A: Don't require dual sim/require dual sim/etc.

11. Q: If you have already considered a phone then please mention the model.

A: Sony Xperial Sola,
  • Good looking with ample processing power.
  • Modding support.
  • More than fast web browsing.
  • Music and videos
  • Sports Tracker heavy usage http://www.sports-tracker.com/

That are the only primary need that I have, if the phone can render pdf that will be beneficial but i don't like sluggish rendering. I am buying the phone for learning purpose (droid ecosystem) and development of apps.

I dont have ample money in my hand nor I want a high end phone. My current phone Motorola WX260 (999 bucks) serves me good. have no real contrainst for screen size but it shouldn't be too big to carry.

Budget is max 15k that I can arrange. Will be good if I get some great deal online with some coupons.

Other than that I don't know what to expect. Not particularly looking for good cam and all, just more than decent music and web support with ample processing power.

Some phones that I like are - HTC WIldfire S, Rhyme and defy (not particularly but decent).

That should suffice I guess , please do suggest me a decent phone.

Regards

For developing apps go with Defy eyes closed.Has the best community support and allows for a lot of tweaking and tinkering.Avoid HTC in this price range if you want decent battery life.Sense is a know battery drainer. In addition to this the HTC phones except for the Beats branded ones have poor SQ.Rhyme is about 25K.Plus it has been made specifically for girls

Use JETEBAY001 for 750 off and the final price is 14155.Use the remaining for a 16GB microSD

How is SE Xperia Active ?

Rugged but overpriced.Resolution is a puny 320x480 compared to 854x480 of the Defy+

Has only 320 MB of internal memory whereas the Defy+ has 2GB..

Only upside is that SE will definitely receive an upgrade to ICS.

But the purpose of your purchase is modding which will be better on Defy+

Another thing in favour of the SE is that it has an ARM Cortex A9 whereas the Defy+ has Cortex A8.

I have handled the Defy+ of a colleague and to me the GB build was pretty fast.

Haven't seen the SE in anyone's hands.

BTW on ebay the xperia is more expensive than Defy+ by a margin of almost 1.5k

Sorry for that v7 error.Seems like S4 is also based on v7 instruction set

BTW u can get the neo v with dealer's warranty at about 15k

Awesome looking phone. The Defy+ looks like a boring Balckberry beside this one.

Don't have much of an idea about dev support for this phone.

If you are okay with dealer's warranty then u can also go with this one.Neo V with official Sony warranty costs 17k minimum.

Ok any idea when this will come out ? Any idea on pricing and all /

Looks killer in white Am game for it.

That mobile is surely good and will find many takers.

No confirmed dated for the launch but my hunch is that it should around late May-June.

I feel this handset will overshoot your budget by around 2K i.e. around Rs 17K as it'll be positioned below Xperia U which itself should be around 20K. That's the reason I didn't suggest this earlier as you said you were on a tight budget. But if you can increase your budget then it's one of the top contenders.

If you are fine with the cost then also have a look at HTC One V its around 17K online, only if you are ok with that funny looking chin at the bottom.

Do update here whatever you buy.

Err....... Xperia U is the lightweight in the NXT lineup.

Both have the same SoC.

Sola has internal 8GB whereas U has internal 4GB.

The Sola has 3.7" screen and the U has 3.5"

Moreover the Sola has floating touch.

But both of them come with anaemic 1320 mAh battery. The Defy+ comes with 1700mAh even though it is a single core phone.

My bad mixed them up ! Thanks for the correction.

Sola = apprx 20K

Xperia U = apprx 17K

BTW Sola = Pepper & Xperia U = Kumquat. Here's the price list which was leaked sometime back on GSMArena.

Hope things are clear now.

#[member='Dark Star'] You could consider Xperia U as Xperia Sola will be out of your budget.

If the U stabilizes to a 15k price range then it will be a good buy.

Wait for reviews though as the battery seems a bit underwhelming (Might be that the U8500 on the U turns out to be more power efficient than the Defy+ in spite of being a dual core)Moreover the Defy+ has a cortex A8 whereas the U8500 is Cortex A9.

Any idea when Sola will be out, how is galaxy R and whats the pricing ?

Or should I just opt for defy + but that doesnt have ICS update. I don't want a mobile with Gingerbread with no planned ICS>

^^ Avoid Defy+ the dev support is poor. I think the Experia P, U, and Sola should come before June. The Sony phones look good, but battery size is poor. The HTC One V has a good unibody design at 17k but is a single core phone.

Galaxy R is discontinued, it was a good phone, but Samsung released as a stop gap arrangement. The Dev support is again poor for the phone.

Your best bet on the current released phones are SE Experia Neo V, or HTC One V. Else if you can find a good deal on LG Optimus 2X, its a dual core phone with plenty of support.
