Hi

I have been trying 3days to install Ubuntu or Mint latest with x64 version on my PC alongside side win 7.

I have used almost all versions in the past felt Mint to be more user friendly
Issues
I get a scrambled screen immediately after ubuntu or Mint logo screen. When I hit install, and It does not show anything thereafter.

My pc specs
Intel i5
Gigabyte usb 3 mobo with p55 chipset
8gb Ram
Nvidia GT 240 graphics.

Ram hdd absolutely fine.

Searching google suggest Nvidia issue, tried nomodeset option while install no use.

Versions I have tried , Ubuntu x64 & x86, Mint x64 & x86, Fedora 16 x64 & x86,
Come on Guys there needs to be a Solution for this.
How to install Mint/ Ubuntu in Text mode ?
I think Nvidia driver is the culprit..

did you tried the 'alternate' version of Ubuntu.

It only CLI. No GUI.

Alternative downloads | Ubuntu

try this and later install GPU driver etc.

btw, I had similar problem when I had GF8800 with Ubuntu. But Mint (v8, I guess) came with that driver and I was able to install graphically.

Can you try the following steps:

Start in Compatibility Mode

Choose failsafe X

Reconfigure graphics

Create new hardware profile

Reboot normally

I tried alternative download. Not working as I am not good with cli. Tried Fedora again but same issue. I think I will install in VM ware on that HDD partition and try booting after installing Nvidia GT 240 drivers

Thank all for the support.

When booting up the installer if you press SHIFT you should get the install menu where you can press F6 to select "nomodeset".

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

"no mode set" (nomodeset) should disable the open source nvidia graphics driver which may be causing problems here.

nomodeset will disable the modesetting and will not disable nouveau driver i.e dynamically scaling the resolution for flicker free boot. Earlier X was responsible for handling boot time resolution which created a lot of time interval since the control jumps from X to kernel and so on.

But with kernel modesetting, kernel gets the control for dynamically shifting the resolution providing in a more faster and flicker free experience. Using this KMS, fedora developers laid out plans for plymouth boot splash.

Anyway coming to topic . try these parameters ,
Code:
acpi=off noapic nolapic nomodeset
during the boot screen.

Since opensource driver for nvidia are nothing but re-engineered samples, the performance and detection can never be close to the ones from Intel and AMD.

One small doubt, the boot options guide tells about 10.04 ; I am using the 11.10! The boot menu is changed. I have to select help in boot menu and f6 and type what Darkstar has provided? Or is there a alternative method?

Any help in step by step fashion is much appreciated..

@drkrack,

I was also experiencing problems installing win7 and Ubuntu 11.10 on my HP G7 pavilion. Finally I was able to resolve the issue. Win 7 allows upto a max of 3 primary partitions. Two of these are taken by system (100 mb) and another primary partition for Win 7. You have to create extended partition on the balance HDD space and create logical drives. You can then install Ubuntu on the logical drives. Hope this will help solve your problem.
