Hey guys

I know I have another similar thread going, but since I will be buying 2 cars and they both belong to different segments, I had to start a new thread.

My options are,
  1. Honda Civic
  2. Chevrolet Cruze
  3. Toyota Corolla Altis
  4. VW Jetta
  5. Skoda Laura
  6. Renault Fluence

The criteria is the same as before. Travel of 30kms per day, plus monthly trips of 300-400kms and will not be chauffeur driven.
Haven't test driven any as yet as my dad and I just thought about this and I have no clue about this segment as I have never looked into it before.

Please give me your suggestions.

don't buy a civic, it's ground clearance is too low. i had to spent a fortune on repairs. skoda owners have many horror stories to share regarding after sales

and service. renault is a relative new comer so best is to see how it pans out before buying. if i were you, i would keep the race between jetta and altis.

amongst these i have some friends who own altis and they are very satisfied. not too sure about the jetta though(i have voted for jetta as i liked it when i test drove it).

I got my wife the Cruze AT and I and she are super happy. I did test the Civic but did not go for it because of its low GC. Also, I have the 2010 Cruze and the 2011 Cruze comes with black interiors and a HU with Bluetooth and iPod inputs. The rear seats are a little uncomfortable but then I am 6'. No regrets for us so far. :)

Why no cruze?

oh! forgot to mention, went for it's test drive. was put off by it's al-cheapo interiors(it was the base model though). my cousin also thought

so, he had booked it before it's launch but asked for the refund after a test drive :P

I think cruze will only be an option if my dad agrees to get the AT variant. Else I might wait for jetta's face lift to come (testing has already started, saw a picture in autocar July '11, launch is expected in mid August '11) and compare it with altis.

I saw Cruze today in Showroom... Its great...

But As you are Going for Petrol, I suggest you the Honda Civic..

Honda Engines are so refined and great to drive, that you love it...

Just Test Drive once.... Then think of it

corolla because its Toyota peace of mind . I own 8 years old corolla . I have hardly spent money on it in these 8years But now in its 8th year it has started asking some work

If you're going for a Petrol - Look no further than the Honda Civic

If you're going for a Diesel - Look no further than the Chevy Cruze

Jetta - Due for a replacement in 2 months

Fluence - Renault is a New entrant, no idea about maintenance, very few A.S.S

Corolla - Bullet proof reliabilty but both P and D are not fun to drive

Laura - Brilliant car but stay away from Skoda! hell lotsa horror stories doing rounds on the web

Altis! Japanese tech and reliability FTW!

That is the only thing it has going for it. Not much of a driver's car.

The only problem with civic is low ground clearance. Mumbai and Pune roads will destroy the underbody methinks.

I'm looking for diesel too BTW.

Ill try and wait for the new Jetta if I can. Skoda and renault are out.

Cruze is the front runner. Civic is second. Corolla is the safe option.

Cruze is also winning the poll by a mile.

Can anyone give me a feedback on cruze's M/T variant???

Yes, I drive the Cruze LT 2010 which has a M/T gearbox. I was looking to buy the Honda City or Vento but:

1. We already had a City at home.

2. The City seemed fairly overpriced, although now, the prices have been reduced.

3. The Vento diesel top model also felt expensive and the car seemed quite small for the price.

4. My factory is very far from home, hence, a diesel car for me made more sense.

5. I did some calculations and found that after the fuel savings over a few years, the difference in the car prices wouldn't end up being too much as I was getting some year end discounts.

Now, about the Cruze:

It is a great car with a solid built. The interior quality could have been better though. The car is fun to drive in empty/open stretches. In traffic, you will be negotiating with the turbo lag and the springy clutch. You may also note that the fuel economy is not very high, it's actually fairly low for a diesel car. I get approx 11km/l in the city with the AC on. If you are going to be sitting on the back seat, they are not very comfortable and the head room is very little at the back.

Test drive the car and see how it feels. See if you can deal with the turbolag and the clutch. I enjoy driving my car because it get a lot of empty stretches and I've become used to the clutch.

With your daily driving of 30km and given the quality of Toyota cars, I would recommend that you get the new petrol Altis.

  1. Honda Civic: Very low ground clearance. FE-wise, the car is only good for 15km avg. city driving. Outdated feel.
  2. Chevrolet Cruze: Great option for the highway, if self-driven. Reliability can be a big issue. Cornering and city driving can feel difficult as the car has almost no power under 2000rpm and handling is quite sluggish
  3. Toyota Corolla Altis: Epitome of reliability. That's about it. Not much to say here, as its a decent/average/maybe-boring car among the options when compared in any other field.
  4. VW Jetta: Why buy a Laura stripped off some features at a higher price? Just A.S.S. can't vouch so much overcharging. Moreover, a new one is coming, so current one is pointless.
  5. Skoda Laura: An excellent car, in almost every single aspect! Just keep in mind, that it's actually worth 3-4L more than it's price but A.S.S. may charge you 1-2L of it in the long run.
  6. Renault Fluence: No clue.

Look no further and book a cruze, having mine for last 2 years SOLID. Flawless Perfection :D
