Hi guys,
Wasn't posting anything for a very longtime coz I was still stuck with a 32 bit system while EVERYONE here was on the 64 bit bandwagon. Now I'm joining the club with my own Brand New rig:hap2: ! I've got all the components but I'm stuck on the choice of HDDs. Help me out. My main system configs turned out to very expensive and I can't spare much for the HDDs. Lemme just give a rundown of the other parts I'm using.
1. X2 4400+
2. Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
5. XFX 6800 GT 256 MB x2
3. Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2
4. Antec TP-II 550 SMPS
5. Antec PLUS VIEW II Cab
6. Logitech G7 laser wireless mouse

For the HDDs, I plan to get 4 80 GB HDDs and RAID them. I wanted to buy the Barracudda SATA II but the average seek time at 11 ms seems quite high. Do you think they're a good choice or should I go for something else? I could go for 2 Raptors, only I'm getting some difficulties sourcing them. As far I know, Samsung doesn't have any SATA II drives. My retailer only deals in Seagate and Samsung, so my choices are quite limited ( I have to buy from HIM coz he's ready to give me credit and I've blown all my cash on the other components!). Also, can you suggest a cheap 7.1 speaker set up(I'm really strapped:D ) ?

4 hard drives in raid 0 is a recipe for disaster considering how quickly drives die these days. Better get a single large drive instead. 4x80GB will cost around 10000 bucks. Instead get a couple of 250GB drives. However DO NOT raid unless you have other drives where you can backup sensitive/important data.

I've got 2 120 GB SATA I HDDs from my present setup as back ups! Anyways, RAID is cool as I ALWAYS have back up drives. I don't need the space as much as the performance. Also, I have a DVD writer for more backups (I'm paranoid about back ups:D !).

Get 7800 GT 256 MB x 2.
Buy Seagate SATA HDD's.
No use of 7.1 speakers get nice 5.1 speakers instead.

What is your budget for the Speakers?

In that case, get two 36gig raptors and raid them. Way better than raiding low performance seagates. Also for 10K, get a quality 2.1 since you already seem to have a 5.1 set. The only 7.1 you are gonna get is creative T7900 which sucks!!! Instead get an altec lansing mx5021. A thousand times better audio quality.
