why don't you go for a home theatre instead. You can get a 720watts RMS 5.1 speaker sub woofer system for sub 15000 mrp.

Narrowed it down between these two players...

Philips DVP5965K/98

DVP5965K/98 DVD and home theater Home entertainment Philips

and

Samsung DVD-HD860

SAMSUNG's Digital World - Hype Vision | DVD-HD860

Don't really need the HD support. Just trying to build a decent HT system cause maybe in furture i might pickup a BIG LCD. Also suggest me if there is any better choice then this. Also i will be adding a Xbox 360 to my setup so i hope buying a DVD player is not a stupid decision...
is it urgent that you pick up a dvd player now ? Imo it would be better to wait since dvds are nearing their life cycle. There will be hybrid players out soon enough which will be able to handle hd-dvd, bd, dvd and might even allow divx/xvid/h264 playback.

Buy any chainees cheppo model for 1000-1200 and after 1yr or so do as Blade said. :)

No Gurantee for Chainees DVD Player:eek:hyeah:

Actually there are some good and many worst product from China. I have a chinese cyberhome 300 (just bought it from US for $20 since it was very easy to region program), still going strong with 90% of DVD (For 10% DVD, it has some compatibility issues). But in general I agree, most products from china has bad repulation.

i say go with the philips - it has more features and better value for money and will last a bit longer than the chinese dvd players.

who knows at what prices the bluray, etc... players will come in the market for if at all they come by next year!!

Hi,

Samsungs DVD player has had some DVD skip issues and also some HDMI switching problems. In that light, philips is the way to go. Good Value for Money. Also check out Pioneer's DVD players. I use 2 of them. Excellent bang for the Buck. Hope this helps.

Well, if you can somehow get hold of these babies from Oppo, you won't look back at your decision and ever regret, these are one of the best performing and probably the probably the least known DVD players available in the market, better than 1000$ Dennon and Toshiba.

Talking about your choices, Samsung HD-860 is a decent HD upconverting player and might be slightly better in video quality than the Philips one, but with Philips you get added advantage of Divx support and using a USB device (memory stick or external hdd) to play your downloaded/ripped dvds. I'd go for Philips.

On the other hand, If you're planning to get an XBOX, it's more than enough for DVD playback on standard definition TVs. It does not upconvert natively and will therefore suck on an HDTV for DVD playback, unless you are techie enough to use XBMC.
