hi all ye networking gurus...

i have 2 desktops in 2 rooms, 1 printer and 1 modem for mtnl broadband(adsl router)

i want to set up a system such that when any 1 computer is on, it should be able to use the printer as well as access the net.

when both are on, they should be in lan, and both should be able to share the same internet connection independently.

and probably to make things tougher, 1 has vista ultimate and other has xp...

as you all've prolly guessed by now, im a complete noob with networking...

is such aa setup even possible?...
plz help

thanks

Hmm
Well the easiest way will be getting a router connecting the adsl modem to the ruters WAN port and each pc to independent LAN ports on the router the only problem will be with the printer either the printer has to be attached to a pc and to print that pc has to be on or get a print server and connect it to the router or you can get a router with usb support and connect your printer to the router that way bot pc will be able to use the printer.

ok..
drop printer sharing.
ill manage with printer on just 1.

is there any other way too?

can anyone post a link where i can see how exactly this router mentioned above looks like..
any brand avl in mumbai would be helpful too...

1 more thing...
i got some cat5e cable but due to change in other comp's position, its falling short.
the rj45 connectors are not put on it yet.
how should i extend this?..just join another cat5e wire by wire, or get male/female connectors...are female ones even available for wires...never seen them...

thanks

Well you can buy the buffalo router link

pretty good router has not failed on me he last couple of months
about joining the cable itll be better crimping them and then using RJ45 Coupler

the other way around is through wifi
connect the router with the adsl modem to through wan port the 1st pc on the lan port

for the 2nd pc get a usb/pci wifi adapter which will cost around a grand and a half.

setup the network on the router
enable wireless radio
assign an encryption key
install wireless adapter on the 2nd pc
search for available networks
and connect

cant be simpler.

Just buy a pronet 8 switch port for 800 bucks, connect the switch to your mtnl adsl modem/router, connect ur 2 desktops and printer to the switch.

Ive no idea about printer sharing in a network. Does ur printer have ethernet port or is it connected to one desktop???

Anyway configure the modem/router in pppoe mode, both desktops will use the net independently.
