Okey here is the situation...

My desktop is connected to a ADSL Modem(Beetel 220BX) and a Printer... Now i have a notebook which i want to share the internet connection and the printer... The laptop already has inbuilt wifi card...

Now there are three ways to do the same...

1. Buy a Wifi card for the desktop and make a network with two PCS

2. Buy a Wifi router and connect it to the ADSL modem and also to the PC and configure the setup.

3. Buy a wireless router modem and a wifi card for the desktop and then configure the same...

Which one would be the best solution... And why... I am considering option number two... Also i want to know that which are the best bang for buck products for the same... Finally the Wifi range for the same will not be more then 15 mtrs...

TIA

I'd recommend 2 or 3.

I , personally have #2 at home . but it requires some more config, heck, it took me and two network engineer friends two whole days , but it was more due to XP and its idiosyncracies... but its a whole lot more flexible, and is the universally used one , and you'll always have help troubleshooting :D

option #3 should be easier, esp of your ISP sets it up for you :) but might not work in all situations

option 2 anyday

Pick a linksys/buffalo router, hook it wired to the desktop

Use the wireless for the lappy

just pick up Akshit Mohans' router na

Option #2 is good. Like I mentioned in the Market thread, I've got the exact same setup!! As far as the modem and router are concerned, at least!!! ;)

Beetel 220BX >> Netgear WGR614 >> 1 wired desktop + 1 wireless desktop + 1 Nokia N95. Got WPA-PSK security set up with wireless MAC filters. Works like a charm.

Okey finally i managed to get my hands on the thing and have setted it up. I can connect to net with both my laptop(Configured wirelessly on vista home basic) and my desktop(hardwired with the router and on XP professional)...

Now the next problem... I cannot access the two PC's i.e. the lappy and the desktop... What could be the problem... Is it the OS Vista vs XP or is it the antivirus, Norton vs Avast or is it the Firewall Vista vs XP... Both the PC's belong to same workgroup...

The IP settings are done through DHCP for the lappy and the desktop and router assigns the IP's to both of them... The Internal IP of the router is 10.0.0.1 and external IP is 192.168.1.2 where as the asdl modem IP is 192.168.1.1... The ipaddresses assigned to the lappy and the desktop are 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.4 respectively...

I cant connect the two amongst themselves... Help me out here...

Edit: Just noticed... I can ping the desktop from the lappy but i cant ping the lappy from the lappy... I mean i cant ping 10.0.0.2 from either the desktop or the lappy which is automatically assigned IP of the lappy by the router but i can ping the desktop from the lappy... Weired :S...

Let me try disabling the norton and then try this all over again :P...

Edit 2: How the fark to you disable norton or for that matter the norton firewall :@

Okey... It was Norton firewall only... Stopped the damm thing...

So finally everything is working now except for printer... I have managed to install network printer but it is not printing... Help me out here guys...

Print server is on desktop and on a XP machine and Lappy is on Vista... And i cant find an option to install Vista network drivers for my desktop which is on XP...

I am using DI-524 WIFI router with my adsl modem running desktop using lan connection from wifi router and laptop using wifi.

Range is quite good.

Okay ... here is a simple solution. I do networking solutions for offices.

As for your problem do this.

Buy a WiFi Access point, need not be a router but even if you do does't matter. Just to clear things up a normal WiFi router comes with 5 Rj45 ports

1 WAN (If router) and 4 LAN

Your net connection is though ADSL !

Follow the steps.

1. Login into ADSL router and enable DHCP. Make sure its IP is 192.168.1.1
2. Now disconnect your ADSL router and connect your WiFi router/access point.
3. Login to control panel for WiFi router and disable DHCP and also change the IP to 192.168.1.2
4. You connection

Phone Line --- > ADSL Modem

RJ45 ADSL -----> WiFi Router LAN Port (imp: Not WAN simply LAN)

RJ45 PC ------> WiFi Router LAN port.
^^ In this above eg both PC on you network wireless and wired will be on same network and can access internet irrespect of status of each other.

Note: In this eg we are using the WiFi router as simple Access Point no routing is done, also you will notice the Internet led on your WiFi will be off, simple ignore it.

As standard procedure change SSID and enable WPA Personal encryption protection if this is for personal use.

If you have problems with signal you could either go for additional router but you may need to cable from router 1 to router 2 ... or go for signal repeater.
But what I would suggest is to go for Linksys router (Dual Ant) ver 6 or ver 8 install the hacked or thirdparty firmware and increase the power of signal reciption from scale of 1-255. The default is 20 and safe limit is 230, so imagin. BTW in Asia pacific you get ver 7 for linksys, which has diffrent chemistry, its not easy to flash and firmware are rare.
