Graphic Cards Help me resolve this GPU dilemma through poll.

I use my rig for more than just gaming. I have a lot of VirtualBox/VMWare usage as well as a few other memory intensive tasks. I can max out 8GB RAM on a 64 Bit OS, so 16GB is the next step.

As for the GPU, I was initially inclined towards getting a GTX580 Twin Frozer II/OC and adding another one later. But I have been reading comments on forums that GTX580 Twin Frozer II cooling performance degrades drastically in SLI mode because of heat build up inside the case. One guy mentioned that the temps became worse than a couple of stock EVGA GTX580.

In any case, I think I would be going for a couple of R6950 Twin Forzer II's, While these cannot be unlocked to HD6970's, I have been reading that these overclock very well 890~940MHz on avg without any significant raise in temps and they perform on par with a HD6970 once overclocked. I would still prefer going for HD6970's provided that I can get custom cooled cards, but since they are not available, the R6950's seem to be the only choice.

And the games?

The Tweaktown Performance Scoren is a combination of:

3DMark 11, Heaven Benchmark V2, Resident Evil 5, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.2, Mafia 2 (PhysX Off), Lost Planet 2, Aliens vs. Predator, Street Fighter IV, Far Cry 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum (PhysX Off) and our four High Quality tests which include Mafia 2, Aliens vs. Predator, Street Fighter IV and Far Cry 2.

A healthy selection which includes games sponsored by Nvidia.

PowerConsumption Chart(warning, look at it at your own risk :P)
MSI GeForce GTX 580 1536 MB Video Cards in SLI - Power Consumption Tests :: TweakTown USA Edition

OMG, GTX580 SLi only consumes 250W more than HD6950 2GB CFx.
you really dislike nVidia don't you :bleh:.

Look nothing against the GTX 580 as such, but at super high-resolution and multi-monitor set-up nVidia doesn't have anything going toe-to-toe with EyeFinity, plus the driver issues of AMD are just people who are supremely convinced that at the point of a high electricity bill and heated cabinets squeezing a measly 15 fps over AMD cards is justified. It is offset by nVidia's CUDA but I see the worth of EyeFinity more in this case, as compared to CUDA which is selectively used by certain nVidia sponsered software suites like Adobe Photoshop.

ATI Eyefinity Technology
What is CUDA?

Apart form this I have nothing to say. Hope I helped and not ruffled any feathers.

@Lord Nemesis -- Sir, I wanted to vote for the AMD HD 6950 but due to typo (HD 6850), have cast the vote for the GTX 580.

^^ Good to know you went with the 6950s :D

But I would have still asked you to go for the reference ones as I feel with my use of Sapphire HD 6950 for 3-4 mnths till date that they are one of the best built cards along with 6970 Reference till date. Volterra VRMs (MSI non-ref surely u will get ChiL) , Digital PWMs , in fact the reference card was as as heavy as the triple slot Asus Direct Cu 6970 Model :)...the reference card itself weighs around 1.7kg or so...when a reference GTX 580 is just arnd 1.2 kgs :D

^^ Ya lets have a poll now itself. Its totally polling time in TE these days.

@ Gannu ---- When is ur rig show off coming saar !

You thought wrong.

Supra, no clue man. Guess sometime next week. The wait is definitely excruciating. :(

*phew*

That was long overdue. So what's the next poll on? Display I am assuming? :P
GPU Choice already tilted the display decision in favor of the U2410 even more. :P HD6950's are not a good compliment for U2711. I guess I will mostly go with U2410 but I am not sure yet. I already got quotes for both display's from SMC a while back, but I can afford to wait a while for the display, so waiting. Don't want to spend a whole lot of money on non-crucial components before the crucial components are in and up and running.

In any case most of the core components are ordered/in here except for HDD/SSD. Other than that I also need to get a new cabby.

you really dislike nVidia don't you .

no, I always suggest the better option.

during 8800GT era, I always asked poeple to try extend budget by 2k and grab 8800GT over HD3870. Now, ATi solutions are simply better.

It's simple, I suggest what's best for poeple considering performance + VFM(why make a afriend spend 30k when even 17k should do the job, if I do end up making him spend 30k aka 13k extra for 10-25% performance, then definitely i'm not a very good friend am i :P)
