Help!!Need to use bband with a PC and a laptop.(Noob here)

Hi i am goin to take up a prepaid bband connection from VSNL. Its of 2mbps. the room in which i am goin to use has my laptop. I need to use this bband in another room wer there is a desktop PC.

how do i do it?
 
Get a device called a switch and connect that to your broadband router, then you can connect Rj45 ethernet cables from the switch to your pc and laptop.
 
it's very simple actually.
just buy a switch ( or a wifi router in case you want wireless internet on your laptop if it supports wifi )
just connect all three( your modem, pc and laptop ) to the switch using the type of ethernet cables you got with the modem. Now, assign ip addresses to both the laptop and the desktop from the same range as your modem( if your modem ip is a.b.c.d you can assign addresses of type a.b.c.x )
in the gateway ip address type the ip address of the modem ( a.b.c.d ) in the dns type the dns server of your isp ( or use opendns, or your modem's ip if it has a dns server )

subnet mask is : 255.255.255.0

that's it, you are all set
 
the thing is that my room and the room in which PC is kept is a bit far so the wired thingy won't work.

if i use wireless router then the PC won't get the 2mbps speed. the agent said that PC room will get 512kbps. i want PC also to get 2mbps. is it possible?

what?? wireless routers working on the 'b' band will give u upto 11Mbps and on the 'g' band will give u upto 54Mbps .. so there's no question of not getting 2mbps..!!

If ur getting a wireless router all u need to do is connect ur modem to it.. then considering ur lappy has wi-fi u'll need to get a PCI wi-fi card for the desktop.. And configure the IPs on the lines 'akg' has mentioned and u'll be good to go.. Only note that if ur gonna be transferring files between the lappy and desktop it may be a bit slow for ur liking with wireless, coz maximum ur gonna get is 54mbps and that too not constant due to distance and interference...
 
the agent told me that if i put the modem in the room which doesn't have PC then lappy will get 2mbps and if i need PC (which is in other room) to get bband also i need to use a wireless router(or was it a modem??) but the speed will be less than that. i am really a noob in this networking thing.
 
the agent is lying. I think he knows nothing about how to setup wifi so he is just avoiding it.
Trust me, I have two wifi routers in my home serving three laptops and 2 desktops.

is there anything other than a wireless router?? any other 'wireless' thingy that will let us to share the bband connection?

wat is the cost of a wifi router? also is it easy to setup that router? also will the pc and laptop get the same speed?

is the modem with the connection in the room of your laptop or your desktop ?

If your modem and desktop are in different rooms, then I suggest you get a pci wifi card ( try to get the n version for both the router and the pci card, they are cheap now. When you change laptop later you won't need to get a new router in that case )

Both the routers I have at home are 802.11g and I get speeds of around 5~5.4 MB/sec when transferring files from one comp to another.

One is a netgear, other is a compex.

And, might I suggest you buy a compex if you can find one. It has got a print server built in and it cost me only 2100 with 3 yr replacement warranty !

as regards your question about any other wireless "thingy", you can setup a wireless network using bluetooth, but it will be wayyyyyyyyyy too slow
