Help needed for setting password for my wireless router

I tried setting password to my wireless router (Dlink 2640U) using wep and wep2 but instead of asking password it simply says unable to connect:p.
I searched for any firmware update to my router and i guess there is no update available.
I am using Win7 in my laptop.

what was wrong i am doing in my setup? It would be very helpful if someone can give step by step process for the setting up password to my router:).

Try WPA2-PSK protocol. When the computer adapter tries to connect it should automatically ask for the password.

tried that but not working may be i should reset my router to defaults.

Even tried reset and configured from default settings, no use:(.

Some who posses Dlink 2640U model help me.

First, are you able to access the GUI of the router? you need to do this using LAN, not wifi. for that the default username and password is "admin".

Now, can you connect using LAN? If not then your router has not been setup. Ask for help from your ISP.

If yes, then your wifi setup is not done. In the GUI, then go to wireless security and set passwords.

Try connecting it through LAN i.e by using LAN cord. Then change the password. Then again try to connect it on wireless.

Also if you have any previous passwords, check if in your laptop, the network setting has saved old password. So it may be trying to connect automatically with old password.

AND use WPA2-PSK password protocol as it provides much higher security than WEP. Keep password at least 6-8 letters long with a combination of alphabets & numbers.
