Help Needed: S/w Issues with nagging certainty

Hey Guys..

Got some s.w issues i believe. Here goes..

I plugged in my SATA HDD (Seagate 160GB) after a long time to retrieve some files.

the hdd had os installed so plugged it in as the sole hdd in my system.

Windows notified that due to abrupt shutdown the last time, it needs to run scandisk.

There were tons of errors which were identified and corrected.. the usual run of the mill notifications about the orphaned records, corrupt keys and the msgs followed regarding the restoration of the values from backup, correcting and stuff. Took a good 5 mins or so.

After boot up, i noticed that both the installed browsers, chrome and ffox were not working.

FFox refused to show up, whereas chrome crashed after a few mins of usage.

Reinstalled both of them.

Also, default IE was taking ages to buffer the data and display the pages.

Now the problem i been noticing is that the browsers are still not working at their best.

-Shockwave flash plugin gets corrupted everytime i am trying to play a video on youtube. This is both with FFox and Chrome.

-http download hangs in between everytime, again both in FFox and Chrome. Even a 5 MB xfer is a rarity.

-Chrome esp is taking ages to show content esp if one tab is closed.

-FFox is doing the job but is lagging/lags but less freq. Takes ages to open.

Measures Taken:

-Reinstalled Shockwave flash player but to no good.

-Scanned the HDD for viruses, nothing found.

-Ran HDD Health, shows everything as fine.

I dont want to format the hdd as i got important s/w installed on it and will be a great pain to set the hdd up again.

Running:

AVG Antivirus

Windows XP SP2

Torrents are running fine. Windows OS running smoothly.

Any help to resolve the problem or an explanation would be appreciated.

TIA :)
