Me agrees with salluks... I avoided the temptation for plunge at a BPO offer... landed up in a job where I am working for the past 3.5 yrs.... :)

Not really. There is a difference. KPOs are more domain specific, analytical. Where as BPOs deal with voice and/or transactional processing. One can build good work experience working for such organizations. It depends on the role/JD one is offered, which can be gauged at the time of interview(s). Within KPOs you can get a chance to do analytics, forecasting, consultancy, software development, data management. Its quite a skill set rich industry.

^id love to agree with you, but unfortunately can't :(

i am working for a "KPO"..all the stuff u mentioned looks fancy on paper but in reality..u are just a worker there who can be replaced in no time.. you may get good knowledge of say ms office or ur domain specific products..but its not nearly enough for you to proactcally use it outside the your company(leave alone the industry).

this is cos, most of these industries do not cater to India customers, so someday when you decide to jump to indian companies..you'll be only as good as a fresher there..

its kind of like people going abroad, initially everything looks rosie.. but ones ur settled in..you start feeling hollow..you will constantly be thinking of doing something "Real" or "worth" in your Life..

trust me.. i've been to a whole lot of interviews in companies such as IBM, they would be wondering where u will fit in their industry..

Thats how bad it is.. if you still wanna join and find out 5 yrs later..be my guest

i know maaaannnyyy people who've left and are sitting at home or doing higher education to get out of this industry..

^^

That is your wish, and what has happened to you, but you can not generalize. I have also worked in the KPO division of a big organization. And things are just as I mentioned in the post above yours. It was easy for me to transition to another company at a decent level, which echoes my experience and domain knowledge.

And what all I mentioned is not just paper talk. Along with many colleagues I have seen the growth in skill-set and experience, and people do get offers from other worth while organization (many moved too), be it an Indian company or a foreign MNC. Now if you are going to target a specific type of industry post - completing some years in a KPO of course it can fail or succeed. That is your prerogative. But it for sure not a black hole like you make it sound so.

Ok before the thread derails and goes off-topic... if any one can help the OP please do so...

We can only inform him about the things to expect at a job, but if still he wants to join it then he can do so..
