Hey Guys ...

I got an avi file with dual audio streams.
One can choose audio track u want to run while watching.
The audio streams are not superimposed.

I tried virtual dub to remove one stream and saving the file but it went way above its original size.
The file shd have reduced in size actually but i guess the compression details were not there for the s.w to act accordingly.
Anybody got tips on that ?

You use the same technique you did the frst time, but you also go to video and select direct stream copy under compression.

No sweat :P

^ What he said.

I have a small doubt though. Was it an AVI file at all?

I mean shouldn't it be some sort of container file (like MKV) if it has dual-audio?

If it is MKV, then VirtualDub won't help.

+1 virtualdub

It should be pretty easy just use fast recompress so that you don't have to heavily re-compress the whole movie and lose quality .

@Sharekhan

Thanks.. that trick did the job :)

@Pixel Pusher

I tried the Fast Recompress as suggested, but had to abort mid way cuz i noticed the size again exceeding the original file size.

Anything i missed out on with ur tip ..?

Any idea:

1) During the Direct Stream Copy method does the quality of the file gets degraded by any measure?

2) how we can determine the size of one of the audio stream in the video files..??

Use fast recompress only when you're doing something with the video. For audio streams, unless you're converting from one format to another or one quality to another, leave it to Direct Stream copy as specified earlier.

1) Direct stream copy = same audio (copied exactly as in the original file)

2) To determine the size, demux the audio and save it - you have those options in virtualdub.

^^ Yes... actually that sounds more correct.

You will have to demux first then under video use direct stream... then under audio fast recompress using demuxed audio stream. Sorry been a little while since I used Vdub

direct stream copy is applicable only to video. In virtualdub mod ( which you ideally are supposed to use ) you cannot work with audio. You are given options to work with secondary streams such as subtitles and audio streams.

FOr audio, you should be using nandub.

To make the option in virtual dub clear

1) Direct stream copy - no processing
2) Fast recompress - no filters used and filters disabled ( you can just select the compression codec and settings for it )
3) Full processing mode - You can use filters like resize, RGB, gamma, overlays etc + compression using a codec.

Ans: No, Quality is intact. It is just copy pasting the streams in fact.

2) how we can determine the size of one of the audio stream in the video files..??
You get various bit rate calculators or part of a encoding application like MeGUI or GordianKnot. Pretty easy to calculate by specifying the length of audio and bitrate.

Sorry but I believe you are mistaken. Please see screen capture below of virtual dub audio options which show options using direct stream, audio from another file (such as a demuxed audio file) or full processing mode which means recompressing.

Also you can see from the 2nd capture here that you can also save out the audio from the original avi as an uncompressed a wav file which of course you can recompress again into the format you would like to save with the avi file.

Err, Pixelpusher you are right in a way, However I have mentioned the steps for Virtual dub mod, which is preferred tool for video conversion. and Nandub for Audio conversion and editing.
