I installed HD Tune Pro on my pc and when I ran it, my pc would stop responding after some seconds, in the meantime my pc response time was huge, and I could not shut down my pc neatly after running it. So, I thought of trying another HDD testing program, I downloaded the software which WD has for testing WD HDDs and when I tried to run a test, It would give me an error saying "Cable Test Failed", I then swapped cables from my optical drive but again the same error. Please Help!

Sounds like ur hdd might be failing. Is it under warranty? Try connecting ur hdd to a friend's PC and check.

It must be under warranty..dont know how much warranty it has, its a WD Cavair Black 7200rpm 640GB HDD which I bought in June last year (7 months old)

Cable test error is just a program bug (with 1.17). Use HD tune Pro 1.13.
Out of curiosity isnt WD 640AAKS Blue and not black edition. AFAIK WD 640GB Black is not available in India.

Yep, you are right, its Blue not Black..anyways I have tried HD Tune Pro version 4.01 which seems to hang up my pc after say 10-15 sec, but no window or anything related to the software opens (although my pc hangs up because I do something, if I dont do anything and leave it as it is, it will stay as it is) and I cant find HD tune Pro 1.13

And btw how much warranty do these HDDs have?

P.S. The "Cable test Error" I get is from Windlg (A software from Wd for testing hdds)

I enabled the SMART feature but it doeant seem to change anything...:(

Do one thing, have your HDD connected to your friends PC and try doing the test. Or try installing Vista or WinXP and try running the test. If the results are proper in Vista or XP, then its surely the firmware with WIN7 which most of the users have faced.

So try doing the above this weekend before you choose the RMA the drive.

Actually all my friends have win 7, and all had the same error, abug with the software maybe...but I was able to run HD Tune Pro...I ran an error scan and it was ok, so do I conclude everything is ok with my HDD? I sometimes get strange sounds from it..(though Im assuming it comes from my HDD)

Test the HDD via the test software from WD or others to see for any errors on HDD,then go for the win7 firmware from WD.Does the HDD report proper temparature too ?

The software from wd (i.e. WinDLG) gives me an error saying "cable test failed" it seems to be a problem with the software compatibility with win 7, as I have said it before in my previous posts that when I run HD tune pro, it hangs up my pc after I try to do anything with my pc (no window or anything opens for HD tune pro) But I connected my hdd (not keeping it as primary) to a friends pc and was atleast able to run the HD Tune pro error scan which came out fine. Temperatures are normal..33-38 c

I also get noises from my HDD, a grinding noise specially when under load. The noise started coming continuously when I ran a full system virus scan, is this normal?

Low grinding noise is normal, Not high and TIC TIC type. If you are suspecting HDD failure, Why not just send it for RMA? Contact Western Digital India on 180011 9393
