Hi everyone
I was trying to connect my laptop and my desktop both using windows xp for past few days but was unable to make the connection between them so that i can transfer files between them.

I dont want to use any router or switch as i want to connect only these two. I am having airtel connection on my desktop through router which was connected by usb port.

Success so far:
When i connect both desktop and laptop directly through lan wire they both are detecting each other.

I had also tried using home networking wizard available in windows xp. But dont know what to do next.

Please help me!

One more success:
When i bridge my lan connections (internet thorough my router(connected to desktop by usb) + home network between laptop and desktop) i can send file though yahoo messanger at very high speed(sent 8mb in one sec).
also I can excess internet on both pc.

But as yahoo messanger has limit of 100mb i need something else.

I connected my friends laptop to my PC using cat5 cable, and ran the XP new network wizard. Could transfer files after that.

^^ but shouldn't there be transparent sharing of files between the two machines....

Why don't u try assigning static Private Ips to both machines (192.168.0.1 and .2)

share at least 1 folder on bot machines, and try opening eeach machine from the other one by typing "\\192.168.0.1" from 0.2

BTW disable bridging and enable ICS on the PC for file sharing + Internet sharing

On a side note, if u have a notebook with 802.11b/g, it prolly would be worthwhile to invest in either a Wirel;ess router or at least a wireless adapter for the PC for a literally liberating experience

Well i want to know wheather a system can have more than one ip address as my desktop is also connected to internet.
well when i try to access my desktop through laptop. First when i try to put a folder for sharing i get error that server service is not started. Which i then manually started. Then when i try to acccess my desktop through laptop using //192.168.2.03(ip of desktop when connection are bridged) in windows explorer it opens the msn search page and nothing else.

Every Network interface in one machine will have a separate IP...since u r trying to share the net and files, I supose you do have 2 NICs in the host PC....

So assuming the NIC connected to the net has a IP of 10.10.0.1, u can assign NIC2 192.168.0.1 and NIC3 (On PC2) 192.168.0.2

Actually, It'd be better if you tell us the full details of your setup including the network topology, as troubleshooting this way is like shoooting in the dark.....
