Friends,

Looking for Information on Chennai,

1 - Which residential area is good nearby Guindy ? 10-15 minutes of travel time is fine. Areas with good locality, shops & Hospital around preferred.
If you have any friends/relatives who plan to give 2 BHK flat for rent or you know any agents who can provide the same, please PM.

2 - Which ISP is good for areas near by Guindy ? Have excellent experience of Airtel wired network in Karnataka but not sure how's the service & plans in Chennai. Is it good to stick with wired provider or wireless USB like (Photon, MTS etc)? Please give name of ISP & best plan (with FUP of at least 25 GB).

3 - Which Mobile provider is good in Chennai based on Good mobile coverage network & 2G/3G GPRS plans?

4 - General Information
Does Chennai has corporation drinking water (something like Cauvery water in Karnataka) ? Heard of Metro water not sure what’s that.

Do you require Air conditioning at home? Places like Bangalore are super chilled in climate, heard Chennai is too hot. Is it advisable to have A/C?

Good places to see around, any other tips related to Chennai would be appreciated.

1. Which area is your office is located at ? and what is your budget ?

2.I am using Airtel for past 5 years now. But these day their attitude have changed in general. You can give it a try though. BSNL is good too. Wired or Wireless is upto you. Some Tenants might make some fuss if you are going to put wired connection in the house.

3. Heard Vodafone is good. Personally using Aircel but the 3G speed sucks big time :| Airtel is also good. IMO, all of them are more or less the same :P

4.Yeah chennai has got Metro Water Corporation here.

5. You need AC for most of the months baring December, January and February. In general it is hot and humid over here.

Where exactly is your office? What is the budget you are looking at? Velachery is the best residential area closest to Guindy, but the rents are on the higher side (15 - 18K for 3 BHKs, 2BHKs hard to come by, but in the 12 - 14K range in apartments, and 10 - 12K range in individual houses). You could also take a look at Ashok Nagar or KK Nagar. Rents slightly lesser than those in Velachery. There is another area called Adambakkam somewhere between Velachery and Guindy.

2 - Which ISP is good for areas near by Guindy ? Have excellent experience of Airtel wired network in Karnataka but not sure how's the service & plans in Chennai. Airtel is the best. Stupid FUP plans apply.

3 - Which Mobile provider is good in Chennai based on Good mobile coverage network & 2G/3G GPRS plans?

Not sure about data plans, but during my limited usage, Docomo had good speeds. Coverage wise Vodafone is the best.

4 - General Information

Metro water = municipal water. Areas under the Chennai Corporation area get metro water for most parts.

Do you require Air conditioning at home? Places like Bangalore are super chilled in climate, heard Chennai is too hot. Is it advisable to have A/C?

Bangalore is no longer 'super chilled' if you ask me :D Chennai is more humid than hot. Compared to Bangalore, hot definitely. It is more like the same climate throughout the year, with high levels of humidity. AC is the only option for people not accustomed to a humid weather.

Good places to see around, any other tips related to Chennai would be appreciated.

Definitely a great place - though very underrated, and (incorrectly IMO) maligned. The safest amongst metros in India. If you have a family, and women folk in the house don't have to worry unlike a Delhi. Not a lot of hang out places in the city though, most common spots are Sathyam, EA, City Centre and Spencer Plaza. Oh, I forgot the most common of them all - the beach :D Hit Pondicherry for foreign booze, you get only local stuff in the city, though my friends tell me that things have improved on that front recently :P

Where in Guindy is your office? If it's good I'd say Adayar, Indira Nagar, Gandhi Nagar. Slight cheaper areas are avilable towards St.Thomas Mount
Airtel services in Chnennai are the same a Bangalore.
3 - Which Mobile provider is good in Chennai based on Good mobile coverage network & 2G/3G GPRS plans? Pick between Airtel and Vodafone, both are equally good in Chennai
4 - General Information
Does Chennai has corporation drinking water (something like Cauvery water in Karnataka) ? Heard of Metro water not sure what’s that. if you are going to use the corporation water supply, make sure you use a water purifier (the water is hard). Where corporation water suppply isn't available theres always a borewell.

Do you require Air conditioning at home? Places like Bangalore are super chilled in climate, heard Chennai is too hot. Is it advisable to have A/C? If youre coming from Bangalore, you wont be able to survive without an AC

Tips: Try to learn Tamil as soon as possible. Till then you can get by with english. Avoid speaking in Hindi/Kannada as far as possible.
Good things: Chennai is one of the safest cities in India

Thank you everyone for help.

Fixing on the residential area 1st.

If one has to travel b/w Guindy & Amabattur (3-4 days Home to Amabattur & 1-2 days Home to Guindy). Maps shows two best possible routes b/w two locations.

It makes sense to stay in middle of both locations (Though prefer Guindy as its near to Airport), but not sure of areas.

Route 1 - 13 Km 21 Minutes -

Route 2 - 15.8 Km 25 Minutes. -

Route 1 - Areas via Annanagar, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar

Route 2 - Areas via Mogappair west, Nolambur, Porur

There are huge apartments in Mogappair west but map shows as them as roads with toll plaza & seems totally outskirts of city. Is it so ?

How good/bad is to travel by Route 1 & 2 in daily peak traffic, Which route would be best ?

Are Route 1 areas inside city & Route 2 totally outskirts of city ? People already staying there can share your view.

You can safely forget about Route 1 at any time.

Route 2 is all right,but still would take awful lot of time at peak hours.

I don't really recommend that you stay in guindy if you are to commute to ambattur for best part of a week.

You're better off finding an accommodation in annanagar/thirumangalam/mogappair area in such a scenario.

@leomax

Thank you bro. Is Vadapalani & Kodambakkam good place, as they both are at almost equal distance from Guindy & Amabattur.

Is Route 1 any good if used during non peak hours (7.30 AM to 9 AM & 7 PM to 8.30 PM), I am sure Chennai traffic is much better then Bangalore :)

Forget Ambattur unless you are the adventurous kind who loves bad roads, horrible traffic and lengthy commutes.

PS: Is your office in or around the OTP?

@agantuk

Office 1 - Amabattur (work 3 days a week)

Office 2 - Guindy. (work 2 days a week)

So was looking for something in middle of both areas. What do you suggest buddy ?

Why don't you stay somewhere around Manapakam/Nandambakam area ? Will be easier to your office.

Non peak hours is between 7 AM to 8.15 AM & 5 PM to 6 PM. Timing you have mentioned is no way a non peak hours :P

try staying at some place like Annanagar,expensive; but peace of mind after work; or may be try Ashok Nagar/ KK Nagar for budgeted rentals!

These stretches have high rates of traffic but you can probably use a public transport and start a hour or two early. Get an AC bus, pretty much available on the routes your willing to commute.
Also these place are in the close vicinity or i should say within the city limits itself. If the company provides you with a cab/bus to commute.. Bindass!

Traffic from CMBT (Koyambedu) to Guindy, dont even ask, how bad it is... Its traffic congested cos of the Metro / Mono Rail project which is currently been constructed.

My Personal Choice would be Anna Nagar as eveything what an outsider wants is there in close proximity, except big malls and theater you have u drive a little. Otherwise its a nice place to put up.

Anna Nagar is a good suggestion. If you can get room mates to share your rent, nothing like it. It is a pretty self sufficient area, and you will get everything there.

@Saiyan

Thank you, Didnt know much about Manapakam/Nandambakam, as I didnt see much advt of those areas for 1-2 BHK houses.

Annanagar added to the list. Looking for 2 BHK flat. if you have any friends / relatives renting for family, feel free to PM.

Which are good English classifieds sites/papers in Chennai ? (Similar to Admag/freeads in Karnataka)

One more Q on vehicles - How good is to drive Karnataka passing 2 wheeler/4 wheeler in TN ? Any idea on road tax ?

^ Yellow pages is what you are looking for. However, need to add that due to extreme demand in most areas most good ones get taken almost within a couple of hours of the morning

@agantuk

Yellow pages may be GETIT diary.

I am looking for Classifieds paper, Are there admag/freeads mags in Chennai ?

@ALL

Pls share your mobile plans (Airtel/Vodafone) with 2G/3G data & ISP plans..

I was referring to Freeads when I said yellow pages. Chances are if you say 'Freeads' not a lot of people will recognise. Just say 'yellow pages' and you should get one. Last I remember it used to cost 10 bucks and came out twice a week. Don't have much idea now

Got it. Same is available in Blore too for 10 Rs. Seems same company.

Please share your Data plans (Mobile) 2G/3G & Broadband plans in Chennai. It will give some idea on what to take in future.

Any idea on bike rental for few days ?

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

Is there anyone who like to rent their bike (even Activa will do) mostly on Sat & Sun ? If you have friends or know someone who do, please PM

Which is cheapest & good city taxi in Chennai ? Meru Cabs are good & accept credit card in car itself. Anything similar to that in Chennai ?
