A friend had some sort of problem with his computer which has an A8N-E board and a Corsair VX450w PSU and a WD 1TB HDD. He is a Doctor so he literally has some life saving data on his HDD. The SATA controller on his MoBo died and no SATA HDD gets recognized, so I got him another A8N-E MoBo and the same problem again within a month - the SATA controller on the Mobo is dead again. Now I got him a IOGEAR SATA controller which handles 2 HDDs but this has come with only Windows drivers on a CD - no floppy disk to use with press of F6 during installation :(

So I am stuck on how to install this Iomega card - searched a lot with Google - no answer found. I have got all the drivers from the CD onto many floppies and I am going to try install these tomorrow after pressing F6 during a Repair Installation of XP.

The card gets displayed during boot and the card displays the 1TB HDD but after the first XP screen there is a BSOD. The installation manual only shows installation of the drivers from within Windows - which means that you need a working SATA controller before you install this SATA controller - THAT IS CRAZY :P

I am stuck in a Catch 22 situation. HELP !!

I cannot change his mother board without a lot of hassles as he has some medical equipment attached to the computer which is set to work only with a parallel port dongle and when we change the board there is a lengthy process of getting new codes for the dongle from the company in Germany :S

1) Disable AHCI, and put the card in Compatible mode
2) Slipstream a XP cd with IOMEGA Drivers built-in

AHCI is disabled

I too had thought about slipstreaming the drivers - I will try this option too.

Cannot do a fresh install because of the problems in getting the parallel port dongle to work - this computer has to start TODAY !! As one of the hardwares attached is an XRay machine and the DOC is getting very impatient about this not working.

I was thinking about bringing the SATA controller and an backup image of his HDD to my Intel setup and doing a Repair Install and after getting it all running Restoring back an image to his HDD - I am quite sure this will work. FINGERS CROSSED

Best of luck.

If the sata controllers died twice, there might be some hardware conflict with the mobo and some peripheral device. btw how do you make out that the sata controller died? i mean what are the steps to check this? :ashamed:

edit: dont the doc have a backup comp? when he has so many critical things attached and running from one comp the margin of risk is too high for his business, right? i feel atleast he should have some data backup option.

WHEW !!! got it working !! The 3rd floppy I inserted had the drivers which were picked up by XP during a Repair Install and a press of F6 key !!

Man, you cannot believe the number of times I have run Repair Installs on this Doc's computer to get him out of fixes. He is not willing to keep a backup computer mainly because he does not have any free space for it :)

No SATA HDD was being shown in the BIOS or during the boot process by the MoBo - thats why I felt that the SATA controller was kaput. The IOGEAR SATA controller picked up the HDDs on the first boot.

The only reason I feel behind the problem of the MoBo getting damaged is because the clinic has a smallish single phase meter and there are 3 AC's and 3 heavy duty medical equipment and a massive compressor which alone consumes 20A... I think the clinics electric meter must be getting overloaded. He has now applied for a larger 3 phase meter and is going to rewire the clinic.

This is a very good controller - cost 3.2k from Prime.

Because he does have a very good noble friend who is free to tackle his computer woes :D.

BTW how come his xray machine running on single phase, AFAIK xray machine is high voltage sucking unit and requires 3 phase wiring by default. Tell him to get it asap otherwise he may end up frying his xray machine or his dental chair.

He has been running his setup like that since nearly 35 years - he has not fried a single patient - YET !! :) Today after I got the computer running I could see that he was losing interest in getting the clinic rewired and 3 phased :S By-the-way he has 3 XRay machines.
