My daughter,s 1 TB WD Elements Ext HDD- had been formatted for use on her Mac, in Delhi. and she added her data to it.
On a recent visit to Shimla- while connected to a windows PC- she by mistake pressed format instead of Cancel... so it formatted 2 percent before she saw the mistake and stopped it and pulled out the drive.
Now on all PC,s it says- This drive is not formatted and asks to format. and on the Mac, the Disc does not show up on Desk top and in disk utility it says-Can not repair Disk, save data if possible and Format Again.
URGENT HELP is required- is there a software that can help to save data or what other solution is possible.
Some one pleeeeeeze help.

Some body wrote about some small shops in Nehru Place doing the work at reasonable rate ( because my daughter's macbook is in Delhi- and her capability to use the recuva etc is very very limited )- can somebody guide where to go for help.

One has to go and ask at Nehru Place. There are a few shops, including standard data recovery companies operating out of small shops. So don't let the size of the shop fool you, ask for the rate before committing. Many times the vendor may ask for permission to format the hdd.
Suggest that you try the suggestions already given before going to commit cash.

Then i recommend testdisk.
It is free for windows, Linux, Mac. And is small in size.
A help wiki on using it. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/OS_Notes#Mac_OS_X_.28Intel.29

Tell her to run test disk without the drive connected so she makes a list of her hdd names in the program. then exit testdisk, & attach the formatted hdd. the new hdd (not in her list) will be the formatted hdd. saying this so that she does not accidentaly make changes to her mac's hdd since hdd's will be listed as /dev/disk0, etc.
