Hi guys,

I plan to buy 3 new computers for my office. These machines are gonna have just office and Tally on it. Maybe, some inventory software on it at a later stage. Win 2K SP4 or WinXP SP2 will be installed. Need onboard Lan and Video. If audio is not there also, it's fine. The requirements are not gonna change for atleast a good 3-5 years. Could you suggest what proc + mobo combo to go for? Should I go for a Celeron or Sempron ? Any mobo which will support dual channel memory?

As of now, I was thinking of a Celeron D 2.53 Ghz proc and any suitable Asus motherboard (Asus P4GE-MX maybe ). I am open to any other good mobos too. Please guide me as I have to place the config by latest today evening 5 pm. I heard about your forum from a friend and the initial glance of what I saw makes me feel this is the right place to ask my Qs. Hope the senior members here would help me.

Thanks in advance.

Sooraj.

celeron is a lot easier option with u, it will just suit ur purpose without any mind struggling. sempron;s at the moment here use the low end via mobo;s which i personally try to stay away from. nforce chipsets will cost too much.

that;s why i said Cel 2.4D is a good optin.will be a peace of mind. & Put XP SP2. Its much more safer & faster for a normal User.

Try to go for a board on the 865 chipset which might be more to ur tune of not upgrading for 3-5 yrs. U may get the ASRock 865 board for 3K.

yeah -- good said though -- cos 865 can have sata & dual channel Ram which will be stuff used in 2moro;s PC. so a lil more expenditure gives u future upgradeability & nice performance boost as well

Exactly,also the person intends to use these PCs for office use so quality of onboard grafix is not important.
Also the 754 based Sempron,2600,2500+ offer SSE3 and 64 bit capability while it works much cooler than any Prescott based CPU.
Also the 2500+ Sempron scores approx. 7k+ in Sisoft CPU Arithmetic Test and if Overclocked to 2.1GHz from stock 1.4GHz it does 9k+ which is more than even a P4 2.8Ghz.
How exactly do you STILL call teh celeron faster and better than the sempron ?
Also the Asus K8S-MX board is cheap and good,based on SIS chipset and also it has SATA, 1 x PCI Express slot...what more can you ask for.

Also the main point,the Sempron 2500 runc COOL [28c at idle,30c max @ full load].Which i dont think any of the Prescotts can even manage.
Also wouldnt this person be happy if the machiens run cool and hence make lesser noise ?

Yes,a low cost sempron , especially those E6 steppings ones,
which darky had posted about here a few days ago, along with a low cost , stable, compatible m/b would be ideal for office use.

infact great VFM.

A complete basic m/c (except for CRT) along with 512 mb ram , 80 gb, dvd combo etc....can be had for less than Rs.15000/-
(rough calculations....)

wow !! thanks a lot for the info..i just reached office and am over whelmed by the info I have got .. :) .. I personally am a AMD guy myself with an Athlon XP 2800+ at home with twin 512 RAM@400 Mhz on an Asus mobo. I have left my comp on for atleast 2 weeks while I was downloading couple of movies and I must say that it has not "burnt out" as I used to believe it would..and I am really happy with the performance of the same. Have never overclocked anything so far, but I think I am only days away from doing that as I see the kind of guidance I am getting from here..thanks a lot, pals !! :) I will decide by 5 pm only and will post the final combination here. Please keep posting whatever additional info you have here. Every bit helps..

AMD Sempron 2500+
Asus K8S-MX Motherboard
256MB DDR RAM
80GB HDD
CD Writer
15" Monitor
Keyboard+Mouse
Full ATX Cabinet+300Watt SMPS

Total - 16,400/-

There you go.Cheap yet powerful and 64Bit Ready

Dark lord,

That is an amazing price..If i knock the monitor and cd writer off, how much will it be and could u please tell me if these prices are available in mumbai ? where to get these from ? a break up would be really appreciated if it is not too much to ask.

AMD Sempron 2500+ ----------->2600/-
Asus K8S-MX Motherboard------> 2900/-
256MB DDR RAM----------------> 1200/-
80GB HDD----------------------> 2550/-
Keyboard+Mouse----------------> 350/-
Full ATX Cabinet+300Watt SMPS--> 900/-

Total - 10,500/-

There you go.Yes these are the current market prices may be 500 Bucks +/-

Thats all.

I live in Pune and not in Mumbai.These prices are in Pune. ;)

@ Darky,

Just out of curosity , does this m/b (SIS IGP chipset) support dual channel rams ??

if so then 2 x 256 would be ideal solution for running XP smoothly without incurring any substantial higher cost.
edit: oops , must be getting old, only 939 cpu's have dual channel support. thanks darky. ignore my query ....

i have asked for the prices of the same in mumbai..even if they come in 11.5 K, I think i will go for it as the config they had given me was for around 13.5 K without the CRT monitor. I am sendig the config to my dealer now.

I would also definetly reccomend a sempron over a cele for all the reasons above :D

Just a question...what will these computers be used for at the "office"

Hi Kev,

These machines are basically for only accounting and correspondence purpose. I need not really break my head so much for such a seemingly simple task. But these machines are going to have a custom made inventory package loaded on it in a year's time. As of now, only Win XP SP2, Microsoft Office 2003, NAV 2005 and Tally 7.2 will be loaded on it. And I basically want a machine which will not need any further harwdare upgrades in the next 4-5 years. Atleast, 3 years !!

Graphics is not a factor at all for me nor is sound. LAN card is a must.

Any more suggestions to improve ? Forgive me for being such a choosy guy..

i have gone for the same config with a few minor changes
40 GB HDD instead of a an 80 GB (spent that extra money on a logitech mouse)
a 400 W SMPS for 200 rs more
2 x 128MB @ 400 MHz RAM sticks at 1100/-
thanks for all the help folks !!
