Help Required with PS3 YLOD

Hi All,
My PS3's down with the dreaded "Yellow Light of Death" or "YLOD". There is a fix for it and the instructional video is on You tube by a user name gilksy. The link is ps3 ylod fix part1 gilksy - YouTube
The fix requires use of some equipment that I guess people with engineering backgrounds would be familiar with. Looking forward to any help that I could get as i am frankly too scared to try and fix it myself. Are there any reliable people in Mumbai I could go to? The last person I gave it to said it would require a new "motherboard" costing 12k - sounded dubious so I said no.
Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. My PS3 is the old 40GB model.
 
Are you referring to a heatgun? Did not bother with the video.

If the console is less than 3 years old (I don't think it is), Sony may offer a replacement if you pay half the price of the new slim 160GB console. At least this was the case until sometime back.

A new slim 160GB console costs ~15.5-16.5k. FYI.
 
Hi,

Thanks for the heads-up. Called the Sony helpline and the guy on the other end did mention that they did have an exchange policy. Will be taking the console to a nearby Sony dealership and will report back.

go as soon as you can.these guys wont consider exchange requests around about diwali.my friend went last diwali to exchange his console but he was sent back citing inadequate stocks.

I too am facing the same issue, mine is also 40GB almost 3 year old model, any update if you could get your exchange??

If its less than 3 years old than they will definiely exchange it,given that you have the orignal reciept.i think they now give only for 30% of the cost.sweet deal
 
Take it to a Sony center and they will give you a new one for 8k

If it's in warranty then you get it for free ofcourse.

One of my friend got his PS3 YLOD. He gave it to the sony service center and they gave him a 50% off coupon on a new one.
 
He is a friend on TDF so I don't know any personal details. This is what he told me.

If you take a PS3 working/non-working, without warranty from any place of purchase (India or outside) BUT without any physical damage then you can take it to a Sony center and they will issue you a 50% off coupon on a new PS3 which he got for Rs.8000odd. He had exchanged his YLOD fat PS3.

I will try knowing the place he went for replacement

@OP: 12k for mobo is a ripoff.
