My laptop was fine till last night but since morning it took almost 2 minutes to start up and had a scratchy sound in everything. All other applications are also slow , even files and folders are opening slowly. I had this problem once in 2007 when the computer gradually became worse day by day and finally I had to reinstall the OS.
I have windows XP now. My disk space on C and D drives was low .. like 1 GB out of 41 so , I did free up some space. But it hasn't solved the problem.

Does it have to do with disk space or could there be a virus ?
Please help.
Thanks.

press windows key & then press R simultaneously i.e. Windows+R

then type msconfig in the text box & press ok.

click on startup tab & uncheck all programs that are not needed & press Apply & press OK.

restart the system & see the difference.

Also check the condition of the hard disk ... open up event viewer from computer management (right click my computer) and check the system log for any disk errors.

Run chkdsk as well to be safe.

I did all of the above. I ran a virus scan using NOD32, cleaned my registry, ran chkdsk, ran msconfig, stopped unnecessary programmes, freed up space on the HDD and the hanging/ slowness did improve to some extent but not completely. I have even installed a RAM booster but to no avail. What is the bloody problem ? Easiest solution is always to reformat C drive but then again the pain of making a backup !!! '

Any other way out. :S

I will start defrag tonight and I am not much of a techie guy so I dont know what you mean when you say PIO mode or the other mode :S

Hey, finding the drive whether it's in PIO or DMA mode is very easy. You can check it in your bios menu (You have to press F2 or Delete :)). I think that it is present in the Advanced settings of the menu.
Check out here to know about PIO & UDMA.

Regarding the problem, Don't use the windows defrag utility, use a third party app like O & O Defrag., which is very good at Defragging. I've been using it for the past 3 years and it does a commendable job. Try it once.

Done with defrag too... no change in status. So the last step now - going to format the HDs in an hour's time. backing up relevant data.
